Yeah, we been trying to figure that crap out also.  It doesnt effect the link, but we have gone over and over our code 100 times, and cant find the reason for it.

Sometimes that damn period shows up, and sometimes it doesnt.

Thought I would post my two cents here...

There is a community, our community.

I guess many of us think that There is going under...  I just see it as the next step.  I have not given up on our little online world because we have made it what it is, and without us it would be nothing.

What did I get out of my experience in There?  I have met many wonderful people, and have had many great experiences.  With these new changes, will it be any different for me?  No.  I will keep logging in to see old friends and meet new ones.  Quite simply, There is a great place to be.

It is up to us, the community, to take it to the next level.

The way I see it is, there is no one programming our real world on a daily basis... we have evolved and become the civilizations that we are now.  We were created, and set loose to become.  I don't think it is any different than what is happening now.

I have been asked what I will do with my There In Person website (http://www.thereinperson.com).  As long as There is online, so will we.

I am pro community, and hope you are too.

See you There :)

Wow, gone for the day and the **** hits the fan...sort of.

Well, There will still be there I suppose, just as it is (and for the most part, just how it was - no updates or bug fixes...is that any different?)

I hope There doesn't cease to exist.

My life won't be the same not being able to log in and hang out and/or chat with my friends.... Sloane, Jude, Kande, Kiwani, Deebee, Daemona, Rosie, Techzen, Rain, Honeybunny, Foxfayte, Lady_Renee, etc etc etc (sorry if you're my friend and I forgot to mention you, I've had two Smirnoffs and I'm a lil loopy).

But most of all, I will be lost without you, Rizzo_Gal.  I don't have many close friends in real life... I tend not to get close to most people.  But even just as a virtual sweetheart, you have gone far beyond that and have become my best and closest friend.  You are very special to me.  :holdme:  :hearts:

Please, There, don't make me say goodbye. =( Rick Slick

Anyone willing to help me buy the code for the servers/program if they do die and decide to liquidate their assets?

Everyone who donates, if it succeeds, gets stock in the company!  Omgz!

I agree with Cytra.  I personally am not going anywhere until they boot us out the door.  As for the new funding, no, it does not mean being bought out.  It means they received funding to focus on the software platform and the engine.  It seems to me like There is going to become an R and D company and not a content provider.

I wouldnt be surprised to see the existing world sold at some point, and that not be a bad thing.  There damn sure hasnt take care of it in a long time, so unless they sold out to AOL, which would make my head explode, it could possibly be the best thing we have seen yet.

Until then, like Cytra said.  Its us the people that are There.  Screw the company.

I wonder if the funding isn't actually just more money from the Army and that is where There will really be turning it's focus.

Ok - Here is my 2 TBux worth on this situation...

Cytra: BRAVO and Well said!  I couldn't agree more and feel the same way.

Evan: I'm with you buddy, They will drag me kicking and screaming before I leave willingly.

As for everyone else:  You need to realize that the time you have spent in THERE has been precious time that you have used exploring, making new friends, hosting event, etc....

For the most part those times were good. (of course we all have bad times but overcome them to enjoy ourselves once again) Those times aren't over.  Spend what time you do have CONTINUING to enjoy yourself, your friends and your THERE experience.  Make the best of it!

You can stand in Karuna or where ever you want and protest, bitch, whine, moan and complain and it wont make a damn difference.  SO - instead of being sad, miserable, and angry take this time to strengthen bonds (get yahoo ids) secure friendships and just continue to have fun doing the things you enjoy in this game.  Keep smiling, keep your chins up and be happy.  If not for the time left then be happy for the times that you did have.

This is OUR WORLD!  Why should we give up on it as easily as they did?

I intend on making the best of it and will go down with the ship like a valliant captain.  I suggest you all try to see the good and do the same.

Looking forward to more fun times with you all....

Sincerely -

Sloanie :inlove: My BOLOGNA has a first name its S-L-O-A-N-E, My BOLOGNA has a second name its M-A-D-D-O-X-E...blah blah blah...Cuz Sloanie Maddoxe has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A.

Ok, ok, ok, here we go my two cents....

First off, the same panic that surrounds There today surrounded There a few months ago when all the Greeters were let go, and 4 months later, There is still up and running! Secondly, no updates or bug fixes, hmm lets see the lag and bad PB experiences have been there since PB2 and before, lol no biggie there right? And I am constantly hearing members complain about wanting more control of the world, well here is your oppertunity, step up. I guess my perspective is quite simple, "we" (the members of There) are THERE! Its that simple, we can either help to make There a success, or not, the choice is ours. All of these things in which arnt going to be happeneing per There Inc, really havent happened much anyway, so, what is the big deal? Dont get me wrong I love There and my There Family, however, it is us the members whom made There what it is today and continue striving to make it better. With out us There is nothing. So in closing, let me just say, that if for any reason the doors close in There, I have some of the fondest memories one could have. And my "friends" in There, arent just my friends in There, their lives, have impacted mine also out here, and Im certain we will be keeping in touch. But people lets not panic until there is a reason to do so. I mean, this isnt the first annoucment that things were going down hill and I am certain it wont be the last. The key is having fun, doing things as you normally would do, and ENJOYING YOUR TIME IN THERE! To many of us this announcment is no surpise, and I for one am not panicing. All of these thing in which arnt going to happen, as I have stated never really happened ofen enough anyway to make them habits, so have fun, laugh, and enjoy yourselves, and I cant wait to see you all There!

Hugs~n~Kisses,

Teal, aka HoneyBunny, Buns, and Honey!

Of course we can awlays blame THEE almight George bush for how the Economy is also ....spending all of our money and breaking the backs of americans ....fighting 2 wars at the same time ....draining our reserver money for hi9s own purpose ....i mean almost 2$-3$ for a gallon of gas ....guezz then he blames other ppl for its when he is tired up in the oil industry and he profitted 1 milloin dollors from the gas prices ... him and the federal government is to blame for how things are going and ppl are getting laid off let and right ,,,when he has went out bought his 2 grils cars .... guezz the money compbined for the cars would have paid off my house ....oh man he probally took the money he made for the gas price hikes and bought the cars for them .... we are the loosers in all of this .....HEY!!!! had a thought .... If There is reading this ... why not bring in SAGA/Nitendo....ECT.... to help back them up .....cuz with high gas prices the cost of our food is going up as well ....I think we are in a depression ... and big one ...
I also have a thought see im not good at designing any thing but i see all these ppl doing things here why not the ppl here that know about graphic ect ..... or even the hackers here help there keep this program the way its supposed to be ....cuz i know you computer geeks are the best out there  :yeahman:  i know you all could help there with patches ect......us as the ppl of there need to unite together and help there out .... as we enjoy the game and want to see it always sty alive.....
peace and rock on

NOONE IS WITH ME TO BUY THE PRODUCT AND MAKE A NEWER BETTER WORLD?

I mean come on!  All your wants and dreams come true.  I suppose it's like they said in the matrix, the humans reject perfection.  Which is sad, you could have there and it wouldn't suck.

Oh well, Looks like I'll have to fund this all myself.  I wont reveal how much i'm starting bids at but I've got a good shot. From what it looks like... they see no profit in the current world scheme... so they are pushing packaging the engine itself to market to third party developers and continue working on the army project.

They say they'll keep the world open for 90 days and then evaluate on a case by case financial basis.

But let's face it those 90 days come the world is gonna close. This stupid announcement has the Tbux market flooded with selling not enough buying the market is slowly going to disintegrate. noone will buy Tbuxs from There at the current market price when they can get prolly double or + rate thru third party groups.

after 90 days they'll shut down when they see they aren't hardly making any money since most people will prolly switch to one of many other V worlds floating around SL and TSO come to mind on the short list.

With all that being said i'm going to assume August 21st comes along the world will close.. lets make the most of the situation while we can and enjoy the last summer of There.

I'm already practicing my August one liners now.

"hey baby the world is coming to an end, wanna go out with a bang?!"

Ok guys, heres the real question...

Why does the company sound like its going under?
1) Unless you are a designer, you have been shelling out cash to convert to T$ whenever you see something you want.  This is of course in addition to the monthly fees you pay if you are on the monthly plan.  Also we shell out cash for in game voice.  There are newbies signing up everyday, and they are all paying for the activation fee, their package fee, and any extra's like voice, explorer pack, music...etc.  Now I ask you...Where has the money gone?????

2)  Im sure someone with legal expertise (attourney, lawyer, paralegal) can look up the laws concerning ownership of digital properties and technologies.  Everyone who has converted cash into T$ has bought digital property with their money.  If the company goes under and scraps everything, they legally need to reemburse users for currency converted in game (remember folks, it is still a currency exchange whether you believe it or not).  Someone earlier mentioned a class action lawsuit whether jokingly or not it is a real possibility.

3)Was There possibly an online Enron?  We chuck out some cash, they rake it in and pretend to be fixing bugs that never get fixed.  Has anyone ever actually been to the There offices?  I dont doubt that it was run by a handful of folks in a warehouse somewhere with a dozen or so servers keeping it up.  This would easily explain why tech support was so hard to come by and hard to reach.  This would also explain why the servers were overloaded so easily and it never seemed to get better.  It might even explain why it is so hard to get ANY info from the website about who is running There, where it is located, and why tey are so secretive.  I wonder how easy it is to get a government contract.

4)  From where I see it, There was $h1tty software, we can ALL agree with that no matter how much you love the world.  How high could operating costs be for a company that bases itself on some really $h1tty, extremely outdated software.  Where the hell did all the money go??  I expect that the operating personel of There (4 tech guys in a warehouse somewhere) decided that they had made enough money and it was time to cut and run before getting raked over the coals by the public.  Therefore they left the software running, made a nice little announcement that pretty much says "we wont be here anymore for you" and moved on to their next money making scheme.

5)Whoever made the comment that There closing was the fault of the Bush administration and a bad economy must be some kind of nut-job hatemonger.  Why does everything in the world that is bad have to get blamed on the Bush Administration, and not on poor decisions made by stupid Fu@king people.  Because of the Bush adminstration I get a lot more cash in my pocket at tax time even though I make next to nothing, thanks to Bush's new adoption program my wife and I are now in line to adopt a child since we cannot conceive again (long sad story).  As far as I see it, he has made my life a hell of alot better than it was without him, so back the Fu@k off!

To everyone else, have a nice day and lets hold There accountable.:)

I'm sure you didn't steal that Enron bit from my TherEnron joke.
Plus, that was in my thread about visiting theres offices, something you also mentioned.  Please, cite sources.  Meaning me.

I agree with Kuffs. Blaming Bush is pretty far fetched. I think that there is alot we can do as a whole, but everyone else here is right, we do have to stick together. Read your TOS before they get changed. (it says somewhere that THERE will be changing the TOS so dont wait on this). Buying THERE ourselfs is not a bad idea,  just a bit unrealistic. Why not write to Bill Gates and ask him to buy it for us? He definatly has the resources. If someone could come up with a really pathetic letter, and have all members sign it, maybe.......... You never know.

Well, here are my 2 tbux.
guess I won't be trying to get myself back in world in full swing. I already lost one thing in world that pretty much devastated me, and it's been hard to stay in world, despite all the friends I love. to put in time and effort, to become reattached and then lose it all... feels too difficult, and painful.
my friends know how to reach me, and I them. if you don't know how to reach me, just there mail me, or ask me in world, if you see me, and I'll be happy to let you know.

I really loved there, but I have no plans to move on to SL. or another world.

and if There doesn't close, someday maybe I'll be back, full force. I'm not giving up, but I don't want to set myself up for the loss.

Was lots of fun guys, thanks:( jellacle

Hi Guys, My avatar name is Blacklion_7 and I have heard the rumors of There.com closing and I've read the post and the news letter. If you have the time please allow me to share my personal opinion on what's going on:

First let me say I currently work for an Internet Based Company that has been in business since Oct 99. Needless to say we have been through changes and are continuing to do so. And this is the 3rd of 3 dotcom's I've worked for.

So from what get out of the reading the Post and the Letter is:

1) There may be trying to license out it's product. Image this kind of environment in Yahoo, AOL, Blackplanet, or any other Internet Portal. Chat Rooms with Avatars (Why Not)

2) There maybe trying to go Public ( If they are short on Cash flow) And if that is the case I say we all buy Stock! Remember this is only version 2.0

3) My personal experience online and with software based companies is they are always changing. It's hard to find the balance between customer base and profit base.
The Company I currently work for start out with a great service fee of $1.99, as they grew, that amount was not enough to generate a profile, so then the service fee increased to $4.99 and another rate of $18.99 to $19.95 then a yearly offer, to the stable and stead rate of $15.99 - It took from Oct 99 to May 04 for our Marketing Department and Corprate Management to find the Balance between Customers and Profit. And for what There.com is doing, I promise you it's a hard balance to find. The People who created and are currently working to see this Platform and environment fly, love it with their lives. I dont think they did all of this just to say "yea it can be done." then let it fail. ( But that is a part of business)

4) If There is in trouble, and is on the edge of closing: What would you do to keep the doors open? I say each Member donates $5.00 to There.com Corp HeadQuarters. Why? Because this is where you play!

4a) I am I big fan of "Tell a Friend"! Even though There is no longer offering bonuses, Why wouldn't we refer our friends? So If you know anyone with an Online life, let them know about There.com. I am glad and thankful to the person who refered me.

4b) As active Members of this Community we should all disregrad Trial Hoppers! What they are doing is using and abusing they service you so willing pay for to enjoy!

So in all, I gather that There.com is trying to find it's way in the Market place of online activities. There may be future developments there may nor be. But right now There is here for us and I think we should be here for There.

This is only my 2 cents. I thank you for your time.
Respectfully
Blacklion_7 - A proud member of the There.com Community. ... And B.I. Said "Lion Remind yourself: No one built you like you. You design yourself. "I see" I said "My one of a kind self get stoned everyday like Jesus did...."

There is not a "little" program. If you look at active worlds they killed everything because they WANTED to increase pricing and just add a few graphical enhancements and now theres only about 200 users active at a time sometimes less. There is HUGE compared to a LOT of 3d chat communitys I've been on. They have an advantage with their domain, they've got good publicity on techtv as thats how I found there, and there are a LOT of members. On activeworlds I could be traveling through the world AW and be lucky to find one or two people as they only hang around ground zero. With There you can travel and ALWAYS find someone, I highly doubt there will go under, if anything is has a very long lifespan.

(if it's server bills they are having problems with I run a hosting company they could always colo their server on my uber 100mbps XO line in fremont, california) =]

Not to rain on anyone parade or anything but I inquired about lifetime warranty of a product before and what they told me kinda pissed me off. If you get a watch with a lifetime warranty, that mean its only warranted thru the life of the product. Meaning until the company stops making the watch; not YOUR LIFE! There used the word "lifetime" to sucker alot of us in. Capital P

Uh yeah, if they stop making firestone tires that pop all the time, why should you have a replacement tire when yours pops?  You'll just get another defective tire.

However they'd probably give you one that wasnt defective at a nice discount for your troubles, but if they stop making tires period, they cannot give you new tires, as they don't make them!

When There was run by Tom Melcher, they had the best intentions in the world. Thats why public beta ran for such a long time, they wanted to get it right. Lifetime meant jsut that, lifetime. They intended the lifers to act as founding fathers to continue to shepard There through for years to come. They also expected to grow a lot larger and faster, so that the beta testers would be a tiny fraction of the overall population, and they expected everyone signing up to be just as cool and productive as the earlier beta testers. It was a time of the best of hopes and dreams. Unfortunately human nature and debts (the two 100% most reliable forces in the world to mess anything up) got the better of them. To make up for the negative cash flow they had to cut corners and take shortcuts to try and grow, and grow big. Member experience suffered as a result, and gimmicks such as the beta test to attempt to create artificial "wants" and "new shiny thing!!" failed and only succeeded in dividing the community resulting in testers who were little more than tourists, and the rest of the people who would constantly lose their friends to beta tests started checking out other games. Loyalty as well as trust began to erode with one very memorable post in official titled "I HATE THE NEW BETA!!" complaining about how beta-friends and non-beta friends would have to stop talking the minute they ran into each other if the topic was about the beta (and lets face it, back then what else was there). While the rush and the aim of "being chosen" by There kept some more active, logged on, and spending, it of course alienated others who just wanted to spend time with their friends like they had done before.

I think had they not played around with the core of There, which was the community they would have survived. In the early days of post-Tom, community morale and loyalty was still extremely high, people were spending all their time in There regardless of headaches, bugs etc because they felt they were all part of a greater family and that There would be behind the them. I think, the community at that time, even if it was the second coming of christ the MMO would not have cared and just kept saying There There There. They had a captive audience and didnt know it. Between organisational changes, break downs in commmunication, and the slow degradation of what used to be a reliable service backed up with knowledgable and responsive customer service, more and more "Exclusive" *AB's that talked a lot, accomplished little and was just little more than a status symbol to "represent" issues that should have been tackled by the community as a whole, we all slowly lost the There we had come to know. A company that once had a very public face where the employees played with the players with their very recognisable first names, helpers that actually understood the game eventually became a little java chat client named "live help" (okay so this happened later :P but Im on a roll here heh). At the same time, SL began to emerge as something that There had originally striven for before such organisational and "vision" changes.

Fast forward to today, where many lifetimers who once felt such a great connection to There like Teara, poured their heart and soul and countless MONTHS into making fun for everybody else, and were even quoted on the website and promotional literature, have thrown in the towel and no longer play. People who felt deceived and worse, nickled and dimed for apparently nothing. Had the community stayed united, I think There might have even been a formidable counterpunch to NCSoft's MMO 1-2 punch nowadays. At best now it is a sparring partner, one way out of his league and weight class and soon headed for retirement.

and here we are today...

Not to mention they did not have Teara's permission to do that and she was quite upset that they had done so.

Also, very very good post fathamburger, This should be front page stuff. Forum Superhero, leaps tall spampiles in a single bound, races through topics and replies to the ones that need it, and can always lend a witty remark or criticism, to better Forumites everywhere!

I have been with There over five years.  I saw everything get built from stick figures running on a single server to the world we have now.  I was one of the first six people at the company.

For what it is worth, I believe that There can have a great community and a sustainable business.  The announcement two weeks ago was, in my personal opinion, very pessimistic and lost the support of the community when we needed it most.  Since the announcement, I have been working to get a plan in place so that I can commit to the staff supporting the service and to the community.  I now have a plan and agreement from the company to keep the service alive as long as we are on that plan.  I intend to update the general There community in the next day or two with the details.  The plan is also not out of reach – we don’t even need to increase revenue to keep the service going!

I realize There will not gain back some of the most supportive members.  I am disappointed by this, but I also understand that people can only put their faith in something so many times before they give up.  For those that have given up, I sincerely thank you for your previous contributions to There and the community.

Some good news for those that do continue their support… you may have noticed the bacios and portahomes were released last week, and the Tyr housing is becoming available.  We are also expecting a client update and some bug fixes.  Also, for developers, we are changing the submission guidelines to those that the DAB proposed.  Yes, we still have developer approvers (yes, plural).  The team running the service is working to find more ways to introduce changes and new features to the world.

In many ways, I feel like I have something to prove about the viability of this community, and I really understand that the value comes from the people in the community, not the technology.

Anyway, I am not on There Universe as often as I should be, so if you want to reply or chat, please send me ThereMail (avatar Brett) or to my corporate mail, bdurrett at thereinc dot com.

Again, for those that helped build the community, whether you are still with us or not, I offer my deepest thanks.  If I don’t see you in There any time soon, perhaps I will see you in a year or two.  :)

Sincerely,

B-

Good to see *some* of the original deck hands are still with the ship :) you're right we do have quite a bit to chat about. Give me a couple of days to get my thoughts together and get back to you.

Please think carefully about what the next announcement will be, before getting too gung-ho about what might seem to be a workable plan at first. I don't think the small advantage of responding by this week is worth any more missteps, the damage has already been done. The next step has to be a winner.

i'll probably get back to you by the weekend.

well SOMEBODY with a name similar did it.

I don't remember exactly who, oh yeah, Deathany, my bad.

Deathany.

You can ask her.  I got confused.  I do admit when i'm wrong, and I should have looked at my buddy list on aim before writing that post.

I got "surved" all right, but you can't really blame me for mistaking people after not playing for over 3 months.

I apologize if this is just beating a dead horse, but figured that since the last post was only on the 22nd, it isn't too bad *Smile*

I have just found There, mostly out of curiousity about some people talking about it on Second Life.  I came here and found that there are some things here that I like better, and some things I like better in Second Life.  Now for the real question:  Would I just be waisting my money if I did sign up for There?  I would love to be a part of this community as well.  If any one has any ideas/suggestions. Please, feel free to let me know.  :D
