Attatched is am email I recieved this morning from There:

Dear Member,

We are very excited to offer you the opportunity to participate in the first phase of There's
brand new Beta Testing Program! This is an exclusive opportunity to try the newest features in There before everyone else, and it's only being offered to experienced members of the community like you!

Starting next month, we will be developing a new Beta environment (on separate servers) where we can periodically test new features before releasing them to the public. We are committed to continue improving the quality, usability, and FUN of There, and believe ongoing Beta testing is essential to making this possible.

That's where you come in! Join the Beta program, and you get to test all the newest features and functions on a separate, limited-access development environment. Plus, your feedback and comments will help us make There even better! Please note: membership in this program is by invite only, so we will only be accepting applications from members we have contacted directly (as the program evolves next year, we hope to make application available to all subscribed members).

Interested?
Simply apply and you'll hear from us soon!

We hope you are as thrilled with this opportunity as we are!

There_Community Opinions are like arseholes we have all got em and they are all differnet!

I got one, what exactly is this? As what we're playing now is beta are they asking us to trial alpha stuff for them? And what does

Actually, we're officially out of Beta, and in limited public release.  They are looking for people to beta test features which they've already tested inhouse.

As far as compensation goes, they didn't pay us to beta test before, so why would they pay us to betatest now?

The compensation will probably be 1. Getting to see the new stuff first and 2. Being able to help knock out bugs by finding flaws better than any inhouse team can, and therefore making There a better place for us all.

Heh, anyone who plays paintball regularly or has posted in the glitch pictures thread will back me up when I say There is still a beta no matter what There Inc says.

.....although now that I think about it, releasing beta products and charging for updates works well enough for Microsoft.....

Yes, I am interested in how they select, as well. I do not have an invite in my Inbox currently, but then again it could be slow-delivery, like Boincer said.

And in this New Beta, is it a totally different game. Like new avatar, different places to log in..etc.?

This reminds me a lot of Test Center. But, since I was in Jolly Pines, I never knew anybody in Test Center. I hope they aren't trying to split us up! ???

I really dont think they will try and split us up. My understanding of that letter is that the beta server will have VERY limited hours.

It will probably be the same game, but more than likely we will get new avatars. And Im  sure we will be testing the new locations and goodies that will later be imported to the main server. This is pretty exciting! It MAY just draw me back to There again. But we'll see :)

I just hope it doesn't split us up.  :(  I'd hate to see half my friends get invited to head over there and then we never see them hardly ever in our world. :((

So hopefully it's new avatars and very limited playing time, just for the sake of keeping us all one big family :)  But congrats to those who were selected!!  :holdme: Rick Slick

I was on the phone with a Helper this evening regarding some problems with logging in. I asked her about the New Beta, and she said it's not really a "beta". It's going to be a one-by-one feature introduction, in which only selected avatars will participate in. The hours will be limited, but basically you go in, try the feature out, and give your feedback. Something like that is what I infered. The features are ones that will be included in the next release in early 2004--they have already tested it "in-house" but as she said it, the reason they wanted to have members try it out is because "they tend to break things."

I also asked her about the criterions for being selected and she said that is many things that they base it on, such as how long you have been a member, the time you spend in-world, whether you have been moderated or not, skills, and if you are a contributing part of the community.

I didn't get one. 'doh

Member Since Feb 15. Did not recieve invite so....
Sent THERE email saying I dont understand the way they are choosing testers...

Karille,

Only a small percentage of There's current population was chosen to participate in this first phase of the beta staging ground. You should not feel singled out for not being chosen, and this is not the only time we will be selecting some of our members to help us beta test upcoming versions of the client and server software.

We invited people that were paid members, who were over 18, and who had characteristics that would in different ways be more likely to tax the system and uncover unusual bugs.

-We used the following criteria, and those selected must:
* Be part of a member program, either lifetime or charter
* Have a clean Moderation history
* Be an active member in the last 60 days
* Be representative of our existing demographic (age, gender, connection speed)
* Possess one or several of these attributes:
   Large Inventory
Beta tester from early Beta (old user data)
   Funzone or Frontierzone Operator
   House Owner
   Event Host
   Club Owner
   Developer
Prolific Tester from Earlier Betas (someone that sent us a lot of great bug reports)

As said before, this is not the only time we will be selecting members to from the current population to help with testing future versions of There, this is only the first phase. We intend to have an open application to the Beta program in the future, though of course not everyone will be accepted.

If you really feel you can be a great tester and a benefit to the beta test program, please send an email request to BetaSupport@there.com so that you can be considered for one of the other upcoming beta phases.

See you There!

Well, I'm even more confused about why I was picked now. I'm none of those things. I've barely been on There as I've been behind an oppressive firewall for the last few months. (DOWN WITH THE FIREWALL NAZIS!) I think maybe they wanted a range of users, not just avid, addicted socialites.

Here is an example of a good friend who has been a member since Oct 8, 2003, who also got the invite.  These are her skills:

Leadership Experience
...Avid Event Host
...Avid Newbie Helper
Social & Creative Experience
...Casual Fashionista
...Expert Socializer
...Avid Dog Handler
Sports Experience & Ratings
...Casual Board Rider not yet rated
...Casual Buggy Driver 1184.677
...Casual Bike Rider 1146.316

As you can see she only has one Expert skill, but she spends a LOT of time in-world and uses the keyboard to chat.

I don't know what There is looking for in the new Beta testers, but it appears that they want active Avies who spend a good deal of time online. BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

I got the invite, I dunno what my skills are exactly but feel free to check them, I have a few experts, no renowned or legendary. I meet some of those criteria at the bottom (which is does say one or several so I do meet those. I rarely use the keyboard to chat. I think they probably chose people exactly as they said they did. If everyone was chosen to test it there would be no point in putting it into test. Just throw it at us in world and say we are testing it. I'm sure you won't be losing any friends. They will probably go try the new stuff and head back to There possibly we will even meet some people we don't usually play with in There and hook up with them in game, expanding your normal circle of friends. Don't be sad guys. I'm sure next time you will be the ones bouncing up and down going w00t new stuff!! and we will be goin wtf, I didn't get one?!?!?!? :) I look forward to seeing new people in the beta and meeting the rest of you through mutual friends :D

Yeah, from what I read when I filled out the app, it won't be a full time server, they'll be doing limited 3 hour or so playtests.  So no, it won't be like we're leaving the regular server and not coming back, we'll just be off for a few hours and then we'll come back and of course not be able to tell anyone anything.  It is really more of a job than a benefit.

I was invited, but I don't have a large inventory, I joined in may, which I wouldn't consider early beta, I've never owned/operated a fz, froz, house, or clubhouse. I've only hosted one event ever, I've never started any clubs, or submitted any items, and I've only sent in three bug reports total. (although they were bugs that I had to work with helpers and QA people on.) So I dont know how I was picked to be invited.

I still believe it is totally random, no matter what they say.  I know of a newbie that just started in November.  Has virtually nothing in inventory, never even been inSIDE a house, much less owns one.  Is virtually broke, has 1 buggy.. nothing else, and his skills are still so low he doesnt even have any bars yet..  but he was chosen.

Its random.  Ill bet some computer in There is running a RNG or something.. barfs up a name, and the invite goes out.

Thats what I believe anyway.  How else could a 3 week old newbie get selected? There 4 All - Community Journal

Nope, Plenty of the rich (or merely well off like myself  ) didn't get invites.

My guess is
A) they only want a limited number of people.
B) They have an even shorter list of people they wanted based on past bug reports (or rants )
C) Filled the rest  by lottery based on demographic fit, time on. ....

I doubt that, I'm running on an 1100Mhz Duron system with a 64MB PCI video card and integrated sound.  Unless they're shooting for the low end of hardware requirements.

I am kinda upset with there way of slecting and the wording..If you ask me makes for bad thinking when someone who has only been in the game 10 days gets a invite to this. I have found 3 ppl whom have been in the game less then a month. This is confusing to me...but then again doe snot suprise me I guess in there thinking.

Aww guys, they can't take everyone or else what would be the point? It's just testing stuff and they wanted a broad range of people to test. If everyone had highest system requirements then how would they know if someone with low requirements would have problems. Different skill levels might have trouble using certain things or whatnot. I'm sure it wasn't meant to alienate anyone and I know this means very little coming from me since I was invited but I'm sure soon you will be asked to test something and the ones of us that tested this time won't be in. Don't take it so personally. :(

I don't believe they are excluding any group of people. This is a random selection to get a wide range of people. They have people who have been in since january and have so many items they caused the wardrobe organizer to be rewritten. They also have newbs, avs with data from only the most recent release and not too many possesions. They also have me who's been in since june, has a frugal number of items and no bank account.:)

Also, there are relatively few people in this. Getting sour about this is like getting sour at the state lottery for not picking YOU, not even ONCE.

It just dawned on me why There requires the new betas to be eighteen: could they be testing an ADULT island? I guess I'll find out in due time.

I wish I could keep you posted, but we can't discuss it.

AGAIN I have seen reply from THERE to people asking baout how they determine who....Funny thing is how does someone that just became a annual member get invited..whom does not own a house or fun zone let alone a frontier zone.
How can they have a large inventory and so on ....I am thinking it sounds good but in fact is not being followed since one person that I will not name does not own only logs like 1-2 hours about every weekend , another I also know is using  Dial up service....so time in game and length played ownership ETC. must not carry much weight....Go figure. :bs: ****DRAMA RUN*****

Maybe they are trying to get a wide range of people, not only old members, or people with super-fast computers and internet connections. The production world will have both old and new members, so why shouldnt they beta test with old and new members?

I think they also selected avatars who have had computer problems running There and have talked with a Helper about it. They do this so they see how their computers will react with the new testing.

SHHHHHHHHH......

possibly, but I honestly doubt it - at least at start up.

I think its more because of the NDA that we are forced to agree to to participate in the program - its a legally binding 'contract', so, in that respect I believe its required by law that participants be 18 or over.  Simply because its a legally binding agreement.

There_Community already said that specific avatars were selected to participate.  That they did not just pick a bunch of random people.

However its not the sense that you guys may be thinking of.  There not selecting specific names rather - specific variables.  Such as - someone who has an extremely large inventory.  Someone who has a specific hardware/connection configuration.  Someone whos able to log in at certain times ... all kinds of variables.

So, while I do believe they are targeting certain variables and is certainly not random in anyway - I honestly dont think they're even paying any attention to the names at all.  Just what the people behind the names can offer (and I dont mean in suggestions/comments).

im just wondering as a few of my friends got accepted and that was because they hosted a lot (at least one of them did) ive been in beta since july some time i forget the exact date and love the game, im addicted to it and cant get enough of it. im happy to hear they are adding new features to the game as i know it is going to make it much more better than it is right now im just hoping that they fix some of the things that arnt working correctly right now.
another thing id like to know is , are they still sending out invites because i sure as heck would like to test out some of these new features, i loved beta testing for there before it was released and i sure would love to beta test these new features to see what cool stuff is comming up for there :)
oh well i guess i will just have to wait and see within time as i didnt get an email and maybe in the near future if they decided to ever do some beta testing again i might get accepted for that :) im hoping for new vehicles that would be nice to get some more cars or something along that line and i am also excited that maybe they will make new features like maybe seasons or something. now that would be super especially autumn would be the best. but we will have to wait and see whats comming up next as i know i am excited to see whats in store for the next update for there!

That brings up an interesting point...

What if *some* of us got a new computer for Christmas, or recently?

How do they pick people based on variables like the hardware check we all did at signup when we could or do have something completely different now?

Just a thought.... Issues are everywhere, and everyone has issues.

'doh

Here it is! Apparently, when I quoted, it didn't appear in my post.

"....in which only selected avatars will participate in."

Leave off the last "in".

"Something like that is what I infered."

You were inferring nothing. The There Helper was, and she was more than inferring: she was bald-faced giving you an explanation. To infer means to hint or imply. "Inferred" has two "Rs", anyway.

"I also asked her about the criterions"

"Criterion" is a single "criteria". There is no such word as "criterions".

Just trying to assist those who are English-impaired, and I only do so when it is absolutely necessary. I'm sure your English instructor will be pleased when you use all my corrections above. Consider it free proofreading.

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

This is not a formal piece of literature. He conveyed his points and if you didn't understand what he meant then perhaps you could benefit from comprehension classes. Yes, he had grammatical and spelling errors but so what?  By the way, feel free to pick my posts apart. They will keep you very busy. :p

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language:

1.
cri·te·ri·on (kr-tîr-n)
n. pl. cri·te·ri·a (-tîr-) or cri·te·ri·ons
A standard, rule, or test on which a judgment or decision can be based.

2.
in·fer    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (n-fûr)
v. in·ferred, in·fer·ring, in·fers
v. tr.
To conclude from evidence or premises.
To reason from circumstance; surmise: We can infer that his motive in publishing the diary was less than honorable.
To lead to as a consequence or conclusion: “Socrates argued that a statue inferred the existence of a sculptor” (Academy).
To hint; imply.

The Helper was hesitant on giving me information on the new program because I did not receive an invite. So, basically, I concluded things from the little information she had given me, which is a valid form of the verb "to infer."

The only mistake I made was putting a preposition at the end of a sentence. So, I guess since that's soooo bad, it is "absolutely nessacary" for you to point it out. ???

Well, Elliott, I have never known anyone to use the word "criterions" except otherwise know-it-all teenage boys. However, I do have to point out that just because it's in the dictionary, doesn't mean it's correct: it may mean it has become "acceptable".

Your use of "infer" is still incorrect, regardless, using it the way you did in your post. It made no sense whatsoever.

I'm sick of "I know everything" teenage kids. You, among them. However, it doesn't look as though your ilk will be endagered in the near future, so I suppose I'd better just become sloppy and an irrational speaker/writer, so I may fit in with the masses.

No, I think I'll stay right where I am and continue "tsk-tsking" those who have no regard for the language. "....what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. Ain't is included in the dictionary. As a matter of fact, it is searched for more than any other word. Ain't that funny?

From Websters

One entry found for ain't.

Main Entry: ain't
Pronunciation: 'Ant
Etymology: contraction of are not
Date: 1778
1 : am not : are not : is not
2 : have not : has not
3 : do not : does not : did not -- used in some varieties of Black English
usage Although widely disapproved as nonstandard and more common in the habitual speech of the less educated, ain't in senses 1 and 2 is flourishing in American English. It is used in both speech and writing to catch attention and to gain emphasis . It is used especially in journalistic prose as part of a consistently informal style . This informal ain't is commonly distinguished from habitual ain't by its frequent occurrence in fixed constructions and phrases . In fiction ain't is used for purposes of characterization; in familiar correspondence it tends to be the mark of a warm personal friendship. It is also used for metrical reasons in popular songs . Our evidence shows British use to be much the same as American.
 :D :D :D :D :D

I got the Beta invite as well. I think that there were like 20 different factors. I have worked quite a bit with There on the pball bugs (not that they have fixed them :wtf:) Also, I have somewhat high skill, was a funzone op, home owner. original beta tester, and have a  a sh^tload of inventory. Woot, if you reread my post, you will find I never said "ain't" isn't in the dictionary. I said it IS in the dictionary, but being in the dictionary doesn't make the word acceptable or proper. You might want to also reread where it says in YOUR post, "Although widely disapproved......"

I have made my point.

Thank you and good night. "....what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it."

I know exactly what you said. I can read, thanks. I was surprised that it WAS, and was commenting on your post. I am not sure what your problem is, but I have no intention of engaging in the little game you play here. So whatever point you thought that you made - wasn't. www.radiothere.net

Well to add to the other members comments AVA everyone is entitled to opinions yes but in this case it is not a opinion your being judgmental on someone for spelling and grammer in which you have no right to be correcting him on. I myself am not happy to have to try reading this thread and scan over pages of comments left back and forth over things that have NOTHING to do with the thread at all. Like others have said it is just a forum and if your so grammer and spelling ANAL  ....maybe you should not be reading things like this as your way to smart for us people whom could not care less if we make a spelling error or say AIN'T...... :wtf: If you are as smart as you implie then you would not be motivated to go on and on about something and move on....anyway....just my thought in the matter since the comments took over 2 pages of this thread up...and wasted my time. My god let it gooooooooo!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR... :iconlol: ****DRAMA RUN*****
