Wow... hmmm... Sounds like one angry young man.. From what I saw, it looks more like a personal site than anything remotely official.. thank heavens. LOL! You know tho... if you go in expecting and even wanting something to be bad, that is exactly what you are going to get! LOL! *shrug*
Curious how it was that he got the 10k at start-up... yet had the pricing plans.. yet says he didn't stick around.. and still yet had such a strong emotional reaction to it all that he wrote such a LONG and detailed review. Innnnnnnnteresting.... (sounds more like someone that has been around for awhile that got POed to me) A naive girl can be infatuated with a knight, but only a woman can love the man inside the armor.

I just came from Official also.. and voiced my opinion. I am rather proud of myself. *grin* I believe I remained polite and dignified. Y'all know how hard THAT is for me! *snicker*
And, yeah, Evan... that is nowhere near being anything but a personal site (with perhaps a few friends involved). A naive girl can be infatuated with a knight, but only a woman can love the man inside the armor.

How long they've been there or not, they do have a point, and besides their stereotyping most of what they said is true. Most of what they talk about are issues that have been braught up countless times on forums, and still aren't fixed by There. Besides, why go after someone for voicing their opinion? Are you all going to come after me because I didn't just praise There and kiss its toes? Expressing anger is fine, but don't chase someone down because they said they didn't like There. Nah, who cares what people say really. I think people had an issue with this person trying to pass their review off as some gaming or news site. I don't see anything on that site that claims to be a big name in gaming, there are many other game reviews on there. Most likely just someone getting pissy that someone said something bad about there and then wrote an article on it . I'd be more angry about the stereotypes used, and the fact that they called it a game, heh. "Don't anticipate outcome," the man said. "Await the unfolding of events. Remain in the moment." - Konrad

I just didn't care for the overall negativity.. and projecting himself as being someone who walked in and, found it horrible and left. Be honest and professional, ya know? Afterall, he had to have liked it enough to get the Lifetime Membership.. and to stick around so long.. and to care enough to write such a long piece.. with screencaps.. etc etc etc A naive girl can be infatuated with a knight, but only a woman can love the man inside the armor.

hehe i thought it was pretty funny and the points he made were brutally honest: boring landscapes, using voice to cyber, the 40 year old truck driver, finding a makeout partner
i just found it humorous b/c all his rants were about stuff that we've all noticed and been bothered by at some point http://vanno.thereinperson.com

Well, I completely disagree with his view of the denizens of There but the other stuff is pretty accurate. Spa sliders really are Attractive-----Ugly, I know I made little change to my starting head. And there is a lack of minorities (not There's fault, it's just who joins). I definitely agree with him about There inc. doing anything and everything to make money by taxing everything. I mean, Daemona, didn't you leave for several months in disgust because of that? Although, this is obviously a person with a negative view of internet interaction. Some of the things he says makes me think he is one of the people who believe that the only ones who interact online are those who have no life offline.
So, in conclusion, I believe this scathing review is the huge gaping holes in the There concept being pointed out by a guy biased against solely-online interaction.

update: A guy from that site AIM'ed me since I list my screen name. Doesn't sound like a bad guy, just reporting what he sees with a pseudo-personal style for entertainment. Screen name changed so he doesn't get flame-bombed. Also, they don't have any membership or even have bought therebux, don't knnow why people say they do:
colin (10:53:08 PM): who cares if the site is "not official" (whatever that means anyway)... one of the biggest tech sites on the net feel that the views are good enough to share with enlightened people for more unbiased opinions: http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/11/08/1655207&mode=thread&tid=127&tid=186&tid=206&tid=209 BlasterCorps (10:53:25 PM): I still think it's not an objective review BlasterCorps (10:54:06 PM): sure there are the 40yo trucker in a bronze god avatar with the bimbo, but what anonymous method of interaction doesn't have them BlasterCorps (10:55:07 PM): also, it's not supposed to have objectives, it's not a game, it's just a very different chatroom colin(10:55:16 PM): i'm going to be very truthful with you here: the person who wrote the review is very open to new ideas and new games. he signs up for many betas and the like. sure, the review is sarcastic, if only because he would like for it to also be entertaining (obviously, it's a pseudo-personal site, not a professional tech site), but there are some very good points (especially on page three) about what There Inc is trying to do BlasterCorps (10:55:39 PM): oh yeah, I agree with the money grubbing colin(10:56:09 PM): yea... the thing is, even though *we* know it's not a game, There Inc is marketing it as such. i mean, just look at /. games... they've posted many articles about There under the guise that it's a game colin(10:56:37 PM): and that's one of the points of the review... to debunk the myth held by people who don't play there that it's a game colin(10:57:07 PM): which is the point of reviews in the first place... to give people who have never played a game a slice of information from someone who has BlasterCorps (10:57:08 PM): yes, but it does that in a negative way, saying There is the poorer product because of that colin(10:57:31 PM): well, i think the idea is that There Inc is kind of deceptive in their marketing BlasterCorps (10:58:28 PM): I agree with many of the negative points you've made, BUT, this is an unnofficial site, these are going to be enthusiasts you're criticising to. BlasterCorps (10:58:39 PM): the vast majority are users since the beginning colin(10:58:54 PM): true, which is why we brought the story to slashdot BlasterCorps (10:59:05 PM): it was posted in the thereuniverse thread that you're just bashing stuff they themselves have bashed in the past BlasterCorps (10:59:12 PM): so don't take anything personally colin(10:59:17 PM): i mean, we want everyone to see it, not just the There users (though we have recieved a lot of agreement from There members) BlasterCorps (10:59:25 PM): yah colin(11:00:14 PM): exactly... and it's not like there was research done into the common compaints of there players... we played there and came up with the same conclusions that many there players come up with colin(11:00:31 PM): there players who arn;t fooling themselves into believing that the game is perfect, heh BlasterCorps (11:01:20 PM): you mind if I post this conversation? colin(11:01:36 PM): i'd like it if my screenname was edited BlasterCorps (11:01:44 PM): I can do that

We have no way of knowing if they signed up for the lifetime deal tho. I asked and apparently expired accounts CAN still access the Official forums. *grumble* Maybe THAT is their problem.. they are cut off.
Seriously.. looking at their profiles.. How much time could they have really spent in world? I've seen newbies here for one night have more people on their buddy lists and higher levels. A naive girl can be infatuated with a knight, but only a woman can love the man inside the armor.

Well they have bumped their sleaze campaign up. show of hands now... who ELSE got a bogus email from some supposed potential member who ran across that really harsh review wanting feedback from members of THERE?
These guys have harvested our real emails from our websites and forums and are now sending that garbage review out to us in Email.
I have added him to my junk mail list, but if they ARE in fact members of THERE, we may have a real TOS violation concerning Spam.
Just a thought as I'm pretty angry that some moron thinks I dumb enough to fall for that ploy to read his crap.

That is what I have been trying to find out for sure, Lynn. It sounds like the expired accounts haven't been deleted.. just left sitting there. Apparently, they still have full access to the official forums, there central, etc.. just can't get in-world. (UGH! So, it is possible that they haven't signed-up.
My issue now is with non-members being allowed access to the forums/etc. A naive girl can be infatuated with a knight, but only a woman can love the man inside the armor.

I received this email, and read the "review" (generious word there, it's really a commentary) with some laughter. and then texturing was just too neat. and only 30 dollars. i mean hell. i like.. things. collecting them. hoarding them. and yes, i really did seriously dislike There, and there are things i STILL don't like, but i will admit to totally hearting the blasted game. -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- GO d--- s-:- a--- C++ u? What I read on that guys take of the game is all true. However if it was such a bad thing then why is everyone still coming day in and day out to play it? Yes there are alot of things we don't like about There, then again there is alot of stuff we do like.Being that its still new we can only hope for things to change and get better.I don't think his comment on only people who are pervs and low lifes is correct though at all. Some people enjoy going to bars and getting hammered and wasting their money that way.Others woudl rather go to the casino and waste it on blackjack or slot machines. We choose to play a game in the comfort of our homes wearing our PJs and drinking coffee. How bad can that be!? We don't have to get dressed up to go and chat to others our avis are dressed for us! LOL Just because he feels There is so bad doesn't mean that it is.Smoking is bad for you and yet a ton of people do it and that doesn't make them lowlifes for doing something they know will kill them.In some cases it makes you look cool.So if doing something you know will kill you is kill then how can playing There be so awful as it doesn't cause health problems.Yes I am rambling because I think some of his points were blown out of proportion.NOw if someone could extract this guys undies from his ass then maybe he would chill out a bit.

I have to disagree here. As Colin said in his IM exchange with Blaster: "obviously, it's a pseudo-personal site, not a professional tech site" But that doesn't mean it's not a legitimate review. I'm very present in the blogging community, and there are oodles of people who have review sites like this one. (8bitjoystick.com is one of my favorites, just as an example.) It is a legitimate review, it's just not on a well-known site like IGN. Claiming that having it posted to Slashdot makes it a quality review, though, is just ridiculous. The person is betting that we won't actually go to Slashdot and READ the posts there, which pretty much agree that it's a trashy review. But regardless of where it's posted, it is a well-written (I'm a quasi-professional linguist, heh) and therefore "legitimate" review.

I'm in a "There sucks, Second Life rocks" period evan
Hoping this Q1(edited, damn Q's) release will make There somewhat better, *sigh*
I agree with Etoile, its legitimate, but so would a 3rd graders review of Where The Red Fern Grows(great book btw, first one I could think of that I read around that age though), the review is just not "big", well, it wasn't untill it was made popular by There forums and SL ones , Wonder how many hits the guy got just cuse of that? A lot, in fact that's why it was posted in the first place. It wouldn't have gotten any attention otherwise. The thread title on the official forums (something to the effect of "first review I've seen") was deliberately misleading; the author wanted people to wonder "how the heck can this be the first review he's seen?!" and click through to read it.

I just realized that the Slashdot article about this review links to TU with the phrase "its fans" - heh! I feel vaguely superior that < my Slashdot profile > shows that I've been on there a lot longer than < zenintrude has >. Heh! He commented a bit on < the Slashdot article about There's official launch >, too.

I've never gotten into the whole slashdot thing, i've got nothin against it and it provides for good news sometimes, but some people are just horrible posters and you can't make out what the actual news is. the first dev to come along that lets you upload your own pics to fit the avvie wins hands down. I do not play there because its pointless and seems to eat away at my hard earned cash, with little or no gain for my expenses.I buy the shirt but it alwys remains the property of there.inc.

Consider this: what you are gaining is the pleasure and enjoyment of spending leisure time in a 3D virtual environment talking with other people doing the same thing. If you don't like that, fine. It's not your thing. But don't say it's pointless - you just don't care to participate. And forgive me for being pedantic, but the shirt is not property, at all. It's virtual.

I guess you could call that a review. Well no that would be lying.
The web site hosting this review contrains only reviews by this one person and his friend Colin.
" I drove a Ford Bronco in the 1980's so I am qualified now to write a review of a 2003 Ford Taurus without ever driving it?"
Heck! Even Bernard Bruhaha would not stretch the truth that far... but it seems to work for Bobby McPrescott!
What sort of 'reviwer' of 'games' would possibly be using a 750mhz processor in 2003?
I mean think about it for a second then discount the rest as the ramblings of a broke demeted college student with a large thesauarus : )
On second thought I read on a bit. This person tested There back in March and just posted his review in November? Strike 2
Looking at his profile it does not appear that he logged on for more than a few hours. He did manage to level up to casual socializer, but that only takes about 20 minutes. He lost at least one or two buggy races judging by his ranking. He rode a hoverbaord for a while as well.
"I believe they've added huge flying inner tubes, rabid llamas, and jet bikes (one of those is made up)."
The words 'I believe' do not belong in a review unless you are reviewing the "X-Files"! Strike 3!
I am really unclear is he ever experienced voice chat in there or not? Some of his writing is conflicting.
One thing I would like is a rabid Lama! I can't find them at the There store. : )
Oh... and while exploring the site I found a pic of Colin and his giant wiener! < http://www.neonowl.net/gallery/summer2k3/P1010093 >
And while we are on the topic of profesionalism ; ) < http://www.neonowl.net/gallery/disney2k3_2/P1010011 > Yeah.. thats journalistic integrity!
Hey! Both of these are things he and his friend posted on his own site ; )

As I've said before, just because it's not somewhere like IGN or GameSpot doesn't mean it's not a valid review. He's not a professional review writer, he's a gamer, and with the advent of blogging and personal publishing we are going to be seeing more sites like this. I've seen similarly bias-heavy reviews on Happy Puppy and elsewhere. Please don't discount this guy just because he writes his own stuff, okay? Sure, his review is based on his experience a long time ago, and it's not a great review overall, but please don't critique him simply because his review is on his own site.

He's not any serious type of gamer if all he's got is a 750mhz processor. Face it, the guy's just some twerp like Digital_Signal_X.

Consider the possibility that he is a poor gamer - as in, he doesn't have a lot of money, and can't afford a better processor. That doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy what he can play. It's not fair to deem someone "not a gamer" just because they have a 750mhz processor.
