I ask often why I am here, but generally in a metaphysical context. The other night I did so when I was, quite out of the blue, invited to a party by someone I barely knew.
“Because you are my friend,” she replied, this person I barely knew, this person I’d talked to about twice, this person who didn’t even know my name, this person who has never once asked me how my day was.
This person.
I am her friend.
Her house was a shrine to the crappy little collectibles that are pawned off to us in the shops and from the auction block, crappy little collectibles that no self-respecting person would own in a real home. A miniature wooden hula girl eyed me blankly, her cold, painted flesh radiating all the beauty that you can possibly construct from 60 polygons. A plate filled with sushi sat in front of me. It had been there for several weeks, I’m sure.
Her house was also a stopover for the leftovers of the There community, people you wouldn’t be caught dead with thanks to their confrontational personalities. They liberally exercised their talents with me. My “friend” had no observable desire to come to my aid. I asked her, eventually, what exactly made me her friend, and you’ll never guess what she said.
I am on her buddy list. This is why I am her friend; this is why I am subjected to her organized teenager circle-jerk. I am on her buddy list. Something tells me that, having been on her buddy list, and up until the point that I began cursing out and insulting her and her guests, that she actually considered me her friend.
A week or so previous another person had me convinced that I was her friend. She wrote me a few pleasant letters, was over all friendly towards me, and gave me presumably genuine compliments me when there was the rare moment that we were in general proximity. I almost believed her.
I might have continued to believe her, had she actually taken the time to speak with me occasionally. I wrote her an e-mail. No reply. I attempted to contact her in world. She was busy. I was invited to events of hers where she would idle in one place for its duration, no doubt bolstering her event host skill while AFK. This is what’s called entrepreneurial in There. This is what’s called an intelligent way of maintaining a high skill level.
This is friendship in the modern era, being written off as an addition to a fattening list of names, a name on the endless member list of some club somewhere. It feels more like having a subscription, being someone’s friend.
Sometimes cuddling up beside a miniature, wooden hula girl doesn’t seem too insane.

Interesting POV on the whole party scene of There. Now that I have no "home" in There I find myself being pulled from place to place based on the whims of which clubs I am in (for the hosts who invite whole clubs) or by those long lost friends who remember a time when we were young and noob and not jaded to tears by the sad state of affairs There has become.
I have learned not to go looking for deep meaningful enlightenment at events with names like "Party nekkid" or "Get Banged" (pball.) I sort of expect superficiality at these places, or at the least a detached blase attitude. If I seek a truely deep connection of the minds I am usually sequestered one on one with someone high above Ootay island in a castle in the sky.
And yes Watersign, I feel your pain on this issue. But you don't ever have to worry about me sending you nice notes pretending that I like you and want to be your best buddy. I wouldn't insult your intelligence with such a pathetic and insincere gesture. I'm happy to admire your insight and loathe the whiny lil beast you can be. But for real, would you want me any other way? Sin like you mean it!

With a perspective like that Watersign I can already tell you your future. You're going to go nowhere in life, it's called "the victim mentality" and if you don't lose it, being unpopular is going to be the least of your problems. ...just call me Number 2

I'm not a victim at all, but someone is certainly going to be one if they don't stop criticising me.
And you say I am going nowhere in life. But tell me.... Where exactly is there to go?
As for whether or not I am unpopular, keep in mind that it is more a reference to my opinions being unpopular than my avatar is. I am on a hundered and nine buddy lists, though I can't name more than ten or fifteen of those people.

Hmmm, I guess I wanna be a victim, I have a big mouth when it comes to semi depressed egotistic people like you watersign, and here's a hint for ya. If you go around moaning about how unpopular you are, you are just plain pathetic. oh yeah, you read right P A T H E T I C, and this is from a person that doesn't give flying f*ck what people thinks about them. I mean, first you start a thread about yourself? OMG get a freaking clue, because it takes some selfloathing raving lunatic like you to even make a virtual world depressing. You want to victimize me? Go ahead and try, I need a good laugh. C'mon and try to rile up a sadist! Or you can slump in a corner like a wuss... your choice. I'm thinking people who read and responded to this didn't get the intention of the post. "Memoirs of an Unpopular Avatar" is a kind of series of insights into There. It's just the title he gave it, rather than a comment about how unpopular he is or isn't in There. back to the original post, not commenting on the flame-fest that ensued afterwards - As far as inviting people you hardly know to events - I do that sometimes myself or go to events with people I don't know simply to meet new people in There. If you only hung round with people you consider "friends" you would never meet anyone new. Actually considering someone a friend you met a couple of times in There though is a different thing. I have to spend a lot of time with someone before I think of them as a friend. WaterSign and I go back about two years. "Cake or Death?" ~ Eddie Izzard

See, right on, Claire. I invite lots of people I don't know to events too, I've got to say, but I am not going to lie to anyone about their status with me. Mostly I'm pissed off about lukewarm friendships and people "collecting" buddy-list entries. Sort of takes away the point of friendship, to have 400 friends you've never talked to.

Since my short term memory sux, I purge my buddy list periodially. Sometimes I will IM folks on my list and ask if they can remember who am I, or what we did to have me add them to my list. We usually just laugh and then I delete them.
At first I thought the chat logs would be my salvation, but I find that they are purged. I currently have only 1 weeks worth. BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

I just stick all the people on my buddy list that I don't know in a folder called "Who the hell are these people?" There's not really that many, maybe like 20 tops. I figure I should save them just in case...I'm not hurting for room or anything.
As far as calling people you've only had superficial conversations with "friends" goes, I don't do that much either. But I think that stems from something I do in RL, which is that I don't really communicate well with someone unless I know exactly where I stand with them. Pretty pointless in a virtual world, I know, but it's a bad habit.
I have some truly wonderful friends in There that I probably wouldn't have gotten to know if they hadn't IM'ed me out of the blue to do something...I would have just lumped them in the same category as the people who I've had a pleasant chat with but nothing more.
LOL so I guess what I'm saying is I wouldn't mind it if someone called me a "friend" without some kind of deep meaningful relationship. This whole post didn't really come out as I intended.
Meh...

I also purge my Buddy list, about once a month.
As for people who just summon up everyone on their buddy list for events... I am torn. I will go if I'm in the mood to, but more often than not I just ignore the summon. I don't consider everyone on my buddy list "my friend" - and I wouldn't expect anyone else to consider me their friend simply because I'm on their buddy list.
Just collecting buddies, especially as a means to beef up an event, goes against the purpose of the buddy list, IMO. "I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong." Bertrand Russell

Im a pack rat in real life, and sorta am one in There also. I don't have the heart to purge the people on my buddylist often, so all I do is take the ones I see all the time, and move them to the top of the list, and move the ones I rarely or never see down to the bottom. Who knows, they may come back someday.
I did purge about 10 names about a month ago, but OMG that was hard to do! Prolly won't do that again for quiet awhile. There 4 All - Community Journal http://there4all.thereinperson.com

If you only hung round with people you consider "friends" you would never meet anyone new. Actually considering someone a friend you met a couple of times in There though is a different thing. I have to spend a lot of time with someone before I think of them as a friend. WaterSign and I go back about two years. |
See, right on, Claire. I invite lots of people I don't know to events too, I've got to say, but I am not going to lie to anyone about their status with me. Mostly I'm pissed off about lukewarm friendships and people "collecting" buddy-list entries. Sort of takes away the point of friendship, to have 400 friends you've never talked to.

yes exactly which is why I regularly purge my buddy list. I see little point in getting constant reminders that so and so are online when I only spoke to them once. Buddy lists seem to be treated as a kind of competition where everyone has to have the most buddies. I personally I see it as a way of keeping track of the people I actually regularly speak to and hang out with in There. "Cake or Death?" ~ Eddie Izzard
