:nervous:  ???

Well, Nalora, do you mean that ALL these things need to occur before you would leave, or would you leave if just ONE or maybe TWO of these things occur??

I think it would really be dreaming to hope that NONE of these things will occur . . . some or most of these are to be expected in most online games . . . hopefully at a very minimum, but they will happen . . .

One of my biggest complaints is the Voice system . . . only about 1 in 10 people seem to have their mics adjusted and then when about 4 speak at once, it is a problem . . . and on top of that, I have recently heard some VERY vulgar conversations which we should not have to be subjected to . . . I know I can shut down my speakers, but I do enjoy the music.

love MOST of it . . . lol

DeShawn    :butterfly:

Oh, back to the original post . . . almost all of these would have to occur for me to feel I should leave There . . . When God wants to see me smile, He shows me butterflies!!

1. Maybe you need new friends? I've met my share of assholes but they are never considered "cool".
2. Huh? We're petty? How so?
3. What sort of activites... like trivia games? There's plenty of those. And if not...host one!
4. ....ok that one's legitimate.
5. Read the forums (both these and the official forums), check your email, hang out in the IRC chat. Thereinc IS communicating with us.... if you do any of these things you will be in the know.
6. Again I'm not quite sure what you mean here... like "Americans are better than everyone else"?
7. That's what Iggy is for.
8. When was the last time you played? There are not many bugs at all in the newest release, particularly the annoying ones like rubberbanding are completely gone. A quick logoff/logon has fixed any bugs i've encountered since the new version.
9. There's support is among the best I've seen. This probably goes back to the forums as well: if you post there, they listen.

Maybe you could clear up the ones I'm not sure of?

Deshawn: There has a volume control with indepent controls for voice, music, and environment. It's under There->Customize->World->Volume. :) Live near Cincinatti? Wanna meet other Thereians?
IM me ingame or PM me here to receive updates about any RL gatherings planned.

Next gathering:
Sometime around Christmas?
Somewhere around Newport?

1. General "cool to be an asshole" attitude of many of the people in There.
I haven't met many of these people in There.  Perhaps I've been lucky?  Either way, you're going to have them wherever you go, real or virtual world.  The trick is to just walk away when they start.
2. Pettyness of many of the people in There
Again, I haven't seen too much of this.  The only real pettiness I've seen is a lot of the complaints about small things (this is not a jab at you) while There is trying to work on the big things.  As has been stated by quite a few people, a lot of the members *are* whiners.  And it's not so much the valid complaints about bugs... it's the "oooomg, There is not open!!  *self destruct*".  That gets a little... old.
3. Lack of activities that stimulate the intellect.
Like Star said, start up your own events.  There does its part by giving  you the option of running your own type of event.  Run some trivia.. or a nice conversation about quantum physics... whatever you want.
4. High cost of everything.
 Agreed.
5. Lack of any communication from the corporation about what is going on.
Main forums, ThereUniverse (and all similar outlets), IRC... you're covered.  I am of the mind that, sure, they need to tell us some things, but that doesn't mean they need to tell us everything.  Though I will say that sometimes when they *do* decide to explain something, there is a tendancy to be a bit vague.
6 Elitist attitudes.
Like with the group in #1, the best option is to walk away.  There are so many others in There who do not fit into these categories.  I imagine you've just had bad luck with the folks you've run into?  Trust me, for every bad seed there's always a handful more of the good ones. :)
7. Harrassment by cretinous people who fall into category 1.
 Ignore.
8. Bugs bugs bugs bugs bugs.
This is where I have to disagree with Star, because there *are* many bugs still in the game.  There will work on these, I am sure, as they receive information on them.  If they didn't care at all, we'd go without things like the recent patch.
9. Polyanna/blinders-on attitude of those in charge.
I don't see the pollyanna attitude... or perhaps I do, but I call it a 'positive outlook'.  They won't get very far acting like every problem is the beginning of the end of There. "I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong."

I think at some point we all feel the way you do now. Unfortunately, the list you provided describes every online community I've ever been a part of, as well as many real world ones.

I think you may find an answer to some of the problems you are dealing with in an old Zen saying. I know it has worked for me many a time.

The saying goes something like this:

"Master, I feel hopeless, powerless and weak. I feel the weight of world upon me. How can I find the strength to carry on? What should I do master? He looked at me, smiled and replied "Help others."."

Helping others won't solve everything. But I find that #'s 1,2,3,6 & 7 become less of a problem when I am spending time doing it. Feel free to stop by the club New Members Social Services if you are interested in meeting some new players who would be delighted to spend some time with you and gain from your experiences in There. :)

Hey Nalora! It was nice meeting you in-world yesterday!  (She didn't remember me; thought I was a masher.) hehe

I don't have time for a full response, but I just wanted to say  a few quick things.  There is full of people who bring all of the characteristics and issues of the real world with them.  Can you expect it to be any different?

In the gathering I had when you saw me, most of the Avies were under 18.  They were loud and obnoxious, and got tiring fast.  HelenK and I finally left for a quiet boat ride.

Basically, I've learned that There is what you make of it! BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

Ignore

Talk to UnkleBob.  He will stimulate your intellect until it hurts.

> 4. High cost of everything.

Go see Digital_Signal_X.  DSX wrote a great book on how to "make a job" for yourself in order to get T$ flowing.

Ignore

Ignore + Forcefield

> 8. Bugs bugs bugs bugs bugs.

Report report report report report.  If There doesn't know about them, how can they fix them?  That's our jobs as Beta Testers... to make sure There is aware when things aren't working right.

> 9. Polyanna/blinders-on attitude of those in charge.

I don't know who you have encountered, but if one person doesn't see, try another.  If that person doesn't see, ask for their manager.

DeShawn, as to the voice problem and vulgar conversations, there are two solutions.

If you want to just shut down ALL voice and still hear the music... Go into your There menu, Customize, World, Volume.  You can drop voice volume to the very bottom which will mute all voice, but still have the music.

If you just want to squelch one vulgar person... ignore.

Of course, if this is someone you know, someone you associate with and don't want to ignore them... talk to them.  Tell them that language bothers you.  If they are a friend, they'll respect that.  If it's a stranger, Ignore... you dont' have to KEEP them on your ignore list, just while they're being vulgar. No, I have some friends in There, and they are not the assholes. I enjoy my time with them, but it seems more and more I have to deal with a Myriad of assholes whose idea of fun is to SPOIL mine, or insert their own agenda into mine.

Secondly, I don't need lectures from the peanut gallery about life. I am most likely the oldest person in There, at 46 years of age. I have a varied life experience, including living on the streets, being in the Military and gaining my Masters degree.

I do read the forums, and I do read the stuff here, and to be quite honest it does MORE  not less to my desire to shut the thing off and say....see ya....I will be out in my garden with my dog if you wonder where I am.

Thing is there is very very very very little room in THERE for just plain, common DECENT folk, and a helluva lot of room for the dregs of humanity and the internet.

When I came to There it was called a glorified chat room. Now it is getting more and more like a teenage goth angst porn site.

Maybe its just me but didn't you post in a forum? You made a statement and opened up a discussion. Naturally people would reply. I'm sorry you didn't like what they had to say but it is the truth. There is full of many different types of people. Much like the real world. If you don't like the people in your current location, go make some new friends. BTW, 46 isn't that old for There. I have many more friends who are much older than that and I'm 18. =) I like the comment "There is what you make of it" It's true, don't try to make There adjust to you, adjust your own There experience. Ok, my harsh ranting is over.

I have also noticed that the There community is changing.  I noticed the same thing in the TSO community right before it moved from Beta to live.  It seems to me that the community is getting younger (same thing happened in TSO).  Funny thing is that many of the TSO Beta Testers eventually got fed up with not just TSO, but the community too and moved to There.  *Wonders where the next exodus is heading ;)* Marcy_D

Thanks Kevin_McVeigh for the advice and comments on adjusting my sound system . . . I appreciate it very much.

And Nalora, I hope you don't really leave There . . . it has so much to offer and like most of the replies in this thread stated, it is up to us the Players to make it what we want and if we create something good, then maybe more will want what we have . . .

1 and 2, you'd be hard pressed not to find a place on the internet that doesn't have these types of people, although within There it is harder to ignore (without actualy ignoring) these people due to the avatars.

3 - Agreed, somewhat, if by this you mean conversation then not agreed, you can find intelligent conversation, its just hard to find. If you mean activities as in interactive activities moreso than chat, then agreed, paintballing, buggy driving, or quizes aren't the most intelligent activities, an example of one would be Chess, Mind Puzzles, etc. There is a chess board... but it doesn't do anything but sit there.

4 - Agreed. My number one reason for leaving There would be this, the greed of a company will always be its downfall, and help groups or reading a book on how to earn money isn't solving the problem of overpricing... only adjusting to it.

5 - agreed and not agreed. I feel they do more than most companies do on letting us know about whats going on, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't do more.

6 - Agreed. This is present in most walks of life, but thats not an excuse.

7 - I don't know about this one... Ignore does wonders, but, if you feel this way so much about so many people you'll end up getting harrased even more for ignoring so many people, If you don't like so many people who act the way as stated in number 7 you'll have probly just as many people on ignore.

8. It is very buggy for something thats been "around" as long as it has, but it is also a very complicated program. I know of alot of worse programs that don't even do as much as There does. However it does seem like there are some bugs that slip through that shouldn't. I don't want to make I set statement on this because I don't know a day in the life of a There programer.

9. What does Polyanna mean? Heh. Anyway, if you mean they don't acknoweldge things, thats true, but its mostly because they are a company and companies usualy don't like to say "we know we made a mistake" although Tom and others have stated that before, or something close to it. To be an upfront and honest company would be the most rare thing I have ever seen.

I know many of these have been touched on before and stated before, and I know it probly wont help any to post such a long winded response, but everyone needs to read more :) "Don't anticipate outcome," the man said. "Await the unfolding of events. Remain in the moment." - Konrad

There are far more assholes and jerks in the real world, sadly we cannot just uninstall them like we can with There.

When I joined I was lucky to meet some of the nicest people in There.  I've seen a few jerks here and there, but for the most part, people I interact with are really nice and are just there for the same reason I am, to have fun.  Maybe I've been lucky enough not to be the target of someone's cruelty yet.  *knocks on wood*

Just don't expect There to cater to your personal needs.  Find what you like, and who you like, and you'll see, it'll be a lot more fun.

Again, ignore the bad seeds.  That's what the option is there for.  Don't let them get to you though -- that's all they want is attention.

Secondly, I was not trying to lecture.  As it was mentioned, you were the one who brought this issue up for public debate.  Often this results in the voicing of opinions different than yours.  I am so sorry I all didn't agree with you and instead tried to show you a different POV or offer advice.  Apologies.

I am a pretty average person.  There is plenty of room for me in There.... if there wasn't, I would not have been a member since February 15th.

Oh whew! I love you guys too.  :holdme: I just had to laugh at that qoute.  :laughroll:

I think that, in a place like There, there's SO many things I can do to escape an annoying situation, and SO little someone can do to actually hurt me! I mean, I can make fun of them for being silly and annoying, I can just walk/drive/board/teleport away. I can make friends with them...Lots and lots of options! I dont even see a reason to use Ignore. There is a fun, happy, safe place! And being a bit evil doesnt hurt anyone!

Am I not right? Even if you do meet some "dregs of humanity" in There, how would that affect your personal game experience if you can choose not to have to talk to them? Or see them or hear them....lol   :cutehands:

Why do I get the feeling that Nalora expected everyone in there to be cookie-cutter white-bread suburban middle America?

Vikio, your screenie was hilarious.  If that was the final straw for Nalora, then I can only assume she was simply a prude.  It's not like she was actually seeing real people have sex.

I did an experiment last night.  I was walking around the boneyard with my forcefield off.  Sure enough, one jerk in a buggy saw me and started punting me around.  Without turning on my forcefield, I climbed up a bone until he went away.  He came back later and I just got in around some furniture.  Continuing the experiment, I found many people who attempted to hit me.  At that point, I simply threw out my casual portazone, set up some furniture, and sat down.  There wasn't a thing they could do to me then.

Say, what's up with that chessboard, anyway?  Someone has set up their portazone over it and put out "chess pieces."  Sure, it looks cool and all, but it prevents anyone else from being able to actually use it.  Can someone perhaps develop a floor painted like a chessboard?

Well there really are such problems in any online community... It's just a matter of finding the right people =)

And great idea, Kevin...  I wouldn't mind seeing a floorsized chessboard...  "Avvie-Chess"  :bounce:  That'd just be a blast =) "Great liars are also great magicians"

Where is this ThereChessboard? I havent seen it...'hmm

Oh, and BTW I wasnt totally evil, I made the pic small on purpose...I figured it really WOULD be evil if it was screen sized.  :perfectangel:

Edit: If ya wanna know how to do it, it's easy...my friend told me you just put 2 benches side-by-side, then put another bench on top of one of them. The benches in the screenie had no backs. So someone sits on the top bench and leans 'back...and someone sits on the bottom bench facing them and leans 'forward...'tada
Hope it works, I never tried it myself.
