Do you think that people will develop virtual friendships in There that will result in real friendships out here?

I think it depends on the people involved and how far they are willing to go to see any kind of friendship form off of an online one.
Personally, I'd love to be friends in RL with any one of my buddies in There, but I'm sure a large majority wouldn’t be interested.
I think it's just how you perceive people online. Are they just part of the game, or are they really friends - its a personal preference.
But to answer your question dirrectly, yes, I do.
... but I being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softly, becuase you tread on my dreams.

Funny you mention this... I was chatting with EvanK about his Caldera Sun-Times site and stuff and he happened to mention that he was from Alabama and so am I so I asked him "what part?" and he told me and I said "really? I'm about 15 miles from there"

Lynn! I remembered something last night from awhile back. Didn't you have the Rick and Blubber website at one time? Seems like I remember someone in There having one.
For those that don't know, Rick and Blubber (Rick and Bubba) is a radio program in Alabama that.. god help us, is being syndicated to other states. There 4 All - Community Journal http://there4all.thereinperson.com

I spent 7 years on Palace, and met some people who are now RL friends. I have met them in real life, and we try and get together at least every couple of years. We all live in various parts of the country, so that isn't always easy, but to answer your question.. yes. Online can become RL in a heartbeat. I've seem some people organizing RL gatherings. This kinda reminds me of the good old days of having BBS parties, where we met some people we played muds with on the BBSs. Then you didn't even have avatars, just text. You didn't even have e-mail or IM.

Well last time I went we went to Circus Circus in Tunica. Anyway, I had a budget of 300 dollars. I lost every dime. Then, about 2 months later, we went back and I turned 200 into 2600!!! I sure could use that again about now. There 4 All - Community Journal http://there4all.thereinperson.com

The official There Real Life Gathering was this past weekend and I can say without doubt that many people were excited to meet the folk they had met in There. In addition I believe many long term real life friendships are now underway.
The success of the weekend sprang mainly from the immense sense of family that we all felt, and this was facilitated by the There employees themselves. This included all the mediums that were participating in the weekend, from the real lifers, listeners to the webcast and the IRCers.
I know there are people that "play" There, but I think there is a larger percentage that just ARE There, who would love to meet and hang out with their There buddies.
At the TRLG on Friday night many There employees and members where already saying things like "for next year we should..." or "I hope next year we can...", by the end of the weekend it was assumed by all that the TRLG will be an annual event that will grow as There grows. A place where once a year we can have family reunion
Looking forward already to seeing you all next year!! Miss P

I only live 20 miles from nbaJammer (GameMaster) and it would be nice to meet him. Elliot lives about 40 miles away, but his Mom doesn't like the idea of him making contact with peeps he has met on the Internet. Wonder why? hehe
I am on a Distributed Computing team (which is here the BOINC name comes from) and have met a number of my teammates. One fellow and his wife have become good friends and we visit each other often. BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

Well, having just returned from the TRLG event over the weekend, I can seriously say that I have made some RL friends from some virtual friends.
I've already met up with Greeter_Canuck and Sigyn...whom I now consider friends. You know, some peeps just aren't comfortable with this kind of thing and that's OK.
One thing about TRLG was putting the avie and the real person together. Meeting everyone certainly made the point that There is a community so real to me.
Please start saving those pennies from TRLG next year. You will not regret it. You might even be able to give HugsaLot a real live hug in person

I'm sure that the friendships people make in There can easily become RL friendships... I'm still friends with people I met that I knew from IRC! I organized a RL gathering for the channel I spent the most time in and it was a blast. Also, I met my husband on IRC, so I'm living proof that friends from a virtual world can make the transition to the real world. ~*Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?*~

The bad thing about this is that I live in the UK - and although I have met a few Brits - most of my buddies are American (and 2 Aussies ) so the chances of meeting any of you are slim
Combine this with the fact I keep spending all my R/L money on There - means I will never afford a bus pass let alone a plane ticket.
But hey I can chat to you all in There - which is why I love it so much - meeting people i would never ever meet in R/'L (not as in i dont want to see you :P)

I am very new to all this chat and game stuff, and yes I am one of those peeps that thought online friends weren't really real... and ya know I never thought I was prejudiced before... but now I do see how very wrong I was in thinking that... I have met so many AMAZING people since playing There and I do know that they are real friends and I do plan on meeting quite a few of them. I was am so happy to admit I was wrong in this way of thinking. Sure, there are people out there on the web that are less than favorable, but they seem to get bored of all us "nice folks" in There pretty quickly. Anyway... Yes, I totally know that There will and has formed real friends.
P.S. I met my first There friend last weekend-- Vanno... what a sweetie!
Mackie Lifeinthere.com Real News for a Virtual World Bamaboo, you are whack... straight and true! Good thing I love you! Pass the popcorn please!

I've been meeting online friends for years (I got into BBS just before they all vanished overnight) from the Pagan Tea House Chat on AOL, to the VWVortex, people tend to be pretty cool you just have to get to know them. Heck the main way we orgnize events on www.vwvortex.com , how else could you get an entire coast of VW freaks to converge to a city for a weekend?
Frankly I think the internet is just another way of meeting people you wouldn't have run into in real life. But much like real life, you have to be careful who ou meet.
