Idea in short:

Time Map as much of the world as I can.

Details:

Time Map might not be the proper term, but what I mean by it is this, and I don't even know why I want to do this, its just something that seems interisting to me, anyway, I want to time how long it takes to get from location to location by every means of travel there is. I will time how long it takes to get from point A to point B, by using each mode of transportation, by running, by hoverboard, buggy, hoverpack, etc.

Right now I'm only using a hoverboard, buggy, and my feet. I will go from Point A to Point B with each and time it, then log the time on a website which I'll post soon if anyone is interisted.

Of course each time will be an estimate since it will always very on situation the exact time. What usefull purpose does this serve? If you think of one let me know. Is there an easier mathematical way of doing this? If there is please don't tell me, lol.

I really have no preference of what I time first, right now I'm just going by whatever I feel like doing. If theres a large census on wanting a certain distance timed by a certain way I'll do that.

If someone is already working on this please let me know, I've not heard anything like this before and it was something that interisted me. Let me know what you think, I'm doing this mainly out of my own curiosity. :D "Don't anticipate outcome," the man said. "Await the unfolding of events. Remain in the moment." - Konrad

How about:  how much time to circumnavigate the globe -- around the world in 80 days?

I believe someone (Nyx?) has already done this, but not on a variety of vehicles.

I'll probly do that eventualy, it'd be interisting to see how many days it takes to do it on foot, my guess would be 4-6 days. Another reason for my doing this was, when new people come and don't have the explorer pack, most likely they'll have to get around by vehicles going place to place, hopefully there will be other ways they can get from place to place, but I thought this might also help if that were the situation. But when I first thought of timing travel I did think of going around the world, I knew of a few people who had already done that, but like you said not on a variety of vehicles, also I bet none of them went on foot, lol. So hopefully I'll do this eventualy. "Don't anticipate outcome," the man said. "Await the unfolding of events. Remain in the moment." - Konrad

Oz you might wanna read this thread on the official forums before you set out on your hike :)

You can get the vehicle speeds by looking into the scrips stored in the ThereClient folder. Look for the .TS files and open them with notepad. Figures are in meters per second.

A casual hoverboat ride around the globe would take about 616 hours, or a little less than a month.

The radius of the planet is 6000km. Therefore the circumference of the planet is about 37,714km. The surface area is approximately 452,571,429 square km "Life is only what we choose to make it, let's just take it, let us be free...

*faints* Well, lets see... ok, so maybe not around the whole world, I'll do the rest though :D . And using the speeds and km map I could just probly use math and figure it all out... but math is not my friend, and it gives me something to do with all my pent up energy. Hehe. hmmm.  you say the radius of the There planet is only 6000km.  That's roughly the size of mars.  The gravity on mars is about .5 of earths, because of it's mass.  How does gravity behave in There?  If it behaves similar to earth's, then perhaps the planet has a denser core, thus compensating for it's smaller size.  But I wonder how the day and night cycles would be effected by a smaller planet with a dense core.
Then again, I'm just babbling because I'm comparing gravity of real planets to that of There's planet, which is a virtual one.  Just something to ponder for the physicists out There.

Also the planet seems to be hollow, atleast most of it because if you ever fall through the ground/mountains, you always see right through them. Suppose it could be a really heavy gas? :p "Don't anticipate outcome," the man said. "Await the unfolding of events. Remain in the moment." - Konrad

How about a buggy ride around the world. Those buggies get insane speeds on smooth surface like the sea. Unklebob     "un-kull-BOB" : More sexiness than you can shake a stick at.

Thats fun to do lynn :D . Yeah buggies do go fast, and if you don't go at High (or maybe even medium, i haven't tested that yet) speed you wont flip over, so I could go at slow or maybe medium and not flip over but still maintain a pretty fast speed. I was actualy trying to go around the world, but I wasn't timing it or using only one vehicle, started in saja and decided just to keep going east, but since I've been doing this other stuff I haven't been working on that, lol. Actually you will if you go fast or turbo... and I really hate the constant fishtailing the buggies do on the water... it's fun to do a couple times, but when you're doing a speed test you don't want to flip every 5-10 seconds.

What we need is a vehicle like the hoverbike that has constant turbo like the buggy... THAT would be the bee's knees  :yeahman: "Life is only what we choose to make it, let's just take it, let us be free...

Yes, there needs to be a faster hovervehicle or air vehicle. Maybe that hovermoped looking vehicle will have constant turbo :D "Don't anticipate outcome," the man said. "Await the unfolding of events. Remain in the moment." - Konrad

When you run your test also include a buggy running full speed with turbo (hold down the right mouse button in default action mode) over water. I tried this out the other night and I was halfway to China in less than a minute.....LOL You gain so much speed that can actually flip over like a jetboat so you have to be carefull with it.

If you look in the There Firsts thread, the user nyx walked around the world. Ask her how long it took.

Also, look at how high we can jump with just your legs. I could believe thereworld is .3g.

or the avvies could just be REEEALY strong... because the hoverboards or buggies dont jump any higher than they normally would..but then again when we hit the ground, we bounce...and buggies do sorta "float" right before they're about to flip over...but anyway, our avvies probably did lotsa time on those stairmasters..or maybe that belt thing that vibrates your butt..either way, yeah. ---------------------------------------------------

Actually the radius of Mars is around 3,394 km.  The radius of Earth  is about 6,375 km.  I'm assuming these are equitorial values.

So the There planet is only slightly smaller than Earth.

ooh! Question for the insane There Explorers! How come when you're freefalling you see Tyr and Egypt and all the rest, but not Saja? WHERE on the world-map is Saja? Is it on the other side or something? Anyone who's gone around the world should know, right? Never Knows Best...

Saja is so tiny it doesn't even show up on the map :)

Heck Compass Island is bigger than Saja... LOL "Life is only what we choose to make it, let's just take it, let us be free...

Actually Saja should be visible because beneath it is a sandy island similar to Egypt.  I don't know if it's the same size, but it is there. Kevin McVeigh

< http://www.erraticism.com/there/worldmap.htm >  That's Myrmex's map site (with a map showing where in There Saja is!;).  It's not updated with Motu Motu -- but you get the general idea.

< http://www.hjsv.com/games/there/maps/maps.html >  That's another map site, but the image on that page isn't to scale (obviously)

Hopefully those will give you a better idea of the locations of the islands :) "I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong."

It might be easier to measure the time it takes to get from point A to point B on the water then do so with each vehicle.  You can then determine the ratios to the speed of running to the speed of other vehicles on a flat world.

The next step is to go through the same process from point A to point B on an incline where certain vehicles will be affected by the ground (any ground vehicles and running by foot)

If you chose to simplify the process you could just use the first method and then take that distance and divide the total distance on map (ie Boneyard to the Tower) by the distance from point A to point B then multiply that value by the time it takes to get from point A to point B.  That will get the time it takes "as the crow flies" to travel the total distance.

Taking into account variations due to inclines and changes of the landscape could be a really hefty chore :)

Or you could just run everywhere!

I'll work on it today probly joe :)

I haven't done any new time mapping lately, so I'll do a new one or two today, I'm thinking Karuna to Zephyr and/or Boneyard to Castle as ubiquity braught up :) Also I'll try to get some screenshots uploaded.

Ubiquity - Thanks for the suggestion, but I realize there are multiple different ways it could be done without actualy doing the traveling distances, but I've never been good with numbers, and I also get to see more of the world when I do it.

I do apreciate the ideas though :) "Don't anticipate outcome," the man said. "Await the unfolding of events. Remain in the moment." - Konrad
