I bought a "Nude" or "Bare" shirt without realizing they had to match your skin tone. My T$2,000 purchase was one shade too light! Sugurie (Sugarme) thought I was too light already, so I didn't want to change!
Any vanillas out There? Hehe!
I'll admit to a few more after some more posts. <- or is it me? BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

LOL! I had the Farmer's Tan for all of 5 minutes when I got my first (and only) bikini. Dang it.. it was a matched set but the skintones didn't match each other. *still grumbling cause I loved that suit*
Hmmmm.... not knowing what a forcefield was.
And hmm.. going into one of the tracks and clicking that yes, I want to race... don't wanna sit around and watch.. wanna play.. LOL Hey, I didn't know the difference yet! Someone went running at me yelling to not race against myself.. but they didn't tell me the difference between racing and just doing laps. Ho hum... lol A naive girl can be infatuated with a knight, but only a woman can love the man inside the armor.

This past weekend I was talking to this very nice lady and let my dog, Sugar, out to play. Well Sugar ran off and I left the conversation to call her back. I returned and started chatting again. We must have talked for 20 mins before I realized it was a different person. They looked like clones and I never looked a the name until I had made a fool of myself. BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

Well, maybe not "the" stupidest thing, but I only had about $3025 left and someone said to help raise my Fashionata skill that perhaps I could buy items, try them on and then return them to get my money back . . . HA
I went into auction and bought a pair of Red Panties for $3000 . . . looked at them, then decided to sell them back, but I could only get $1200 refund . . . what happened to the 30 min, full refund ?
Well, anyway the stupid part was that rather than get ripped out of $1800, I kept the stupid panties . . . so now I got only $25 but some sexy drawers . . . LOL

I caught on pretty fast when I logged in, so the stupid thing for me was continually asking someone how to do something, and then figuring it out before they finished typing the explanation! It's not nice to make people feel like they're not needed. And also I kept using smiley faces like ^_^, ~_^, and >_< instead of typing something that would trigger an emote. Never Knows Best...

Probably too numerous to mention, but:
Not realizing that I was in "noob uniform" and couldn't figure out why everyone was asking if I was new!!!
Buying something from auctions that was just wrong, wrong, wrong, returning it and losing about $2000T.
Asking someone when I should meet them to return the hoverboard they had lent me.
Not being able to figure out how to get upstairs in a dark Bali Hai. (Ramp? What ramp??)

the first newbie thing i did.... hmm....
ah yes.
there was that time where vmcl1998 let me borrow a hoverboard of hers to try out, and when she was explaining how to use the board, and was saying "push ctrl and the left mouse button", i tried that, and shot off without seeing the rest of the explaination (i kinda figured out that was the combination for the turbo after that)
other than that, i knew virtually everything about there from reading these forums... i think these forums are more helpful than the official there help files You are an Intrepid-class Scout, Starfleet's frontline sentry. You're a bit of an enigma. Your grace and intelligence may go unnoticed, but people rely on you for your insight and ability.

lol, on my first day i spawned in HB park, and was running around thinking that if people left their vehicles around i could take them and they could be mine, so i found a buggy and followed everyone around to see if they would get off/out of their vehicle and leave it there. by the end of my first day i had 20+ boards, buggies and packs that werent mine, thinking i could get rich selling them. Then to our amazement, They starte disappearing from our inventories...EEEEEK THESE PPL WERE GONNA KNOW WE STOLE THEIR STUFF, THE THERE COPS ARE GONNA SUSPEND US FOR SURE FOR THIS!!!! I like to explain to ppl my life is one long blonde moment, mix it with being a newb and what ya got? A BAMA THATS WHAT!
I have imd ppl thinking they were someone else....I have knocked ppl to the moon with boards....I have asked some very stupid questions (thank goodness for patient ppl)....I have made some serious goof ups....I kissed a 14 yr old kid on a bench (yeah didnt think to make the comment "I sure hope your old enuff" til AFTER the initial '''kiss had been placed) And I think I cursed someone out in Hebrew.....Come on, anyone who knows me in game knows about my blonde moments...Some still believe I am a newb that had the fortune to hook up with a very nice designer... I am surprised noone else has posted these Maybe I am just a bigger idiot!
Anyhow, couldn't figure out how to join convos. I would walk through the convos thinking if I just moved my avie into position the chat bubbles would become solid!
Then I blew my 10K the very first night thinking i could earn more doing tasks of some sort (doh!
I never did the skin tone mistake but I DID do the return-an-auction-item for only the There wholesale price mistake
Um how about character quirks? Is there anything you do that you don't see otehrs do in There? When I suck at racing I usually hop off my bike, board, or buggy, and empty a paintgun clip onto it out of sheer frustration. I am the only freak I have seen do this! Sin like you mean it!

LOL I soooooooo want to see that, Daemona!
Hmmm... since I am technically a newbie for 3 months.. I have to be able to label this as a newbie boo boo! On a group tour, the guide had a group IM/Chat/WhateverThePookiesItIsCalled open. I had it moved down in the corner.. nice and out of the way (is there REALLY an out of the way spot for those things?) The guide went to the next location and sent a summon to the group.. I then accidently hit summon instead of accepting to go. EEP! One guy started yelling "WHO ARE YOU?!" lol A naive girl can be infatuated with a knight, but only a woman can love the man inside the armor.

Does anyone else think of There in RL situations. Like, I saw a young lady at the airport yesterday and she looked like she just walked out of the game! I wanted to go over and talk to her. But, not looking anything like my young, buff avie I went on to my gate. BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

Okay. On my first day, I sat down on a bench, and I could NOT figure out how to get back up again. I was so embarrassed when I finally asked my mentor how in the hell do I escape this damn bench! I felt sooo stupid.
And it took me about a week to figure out the water was hard, until I accidentally drove a buggy into it. So to this day as a part of the Scotty Special Tours, I make sure to drive my buggy, screaming newbie in tow, over a cliff and onto that hard water. Hey! They have to learn!!
Im such a good mentor.

Argh. Couldn't retrieve it, couldn't find it, I was sooooo mad!!

I’ve always been one to speak to strangers, but now I think of There when I do. The day after I posted the airport incident, I was leaving a restaurant and noticed a lady eating lunch and reading "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown, a book I recently listened to. She looked to be about 85% done. I stopped and asked what she thought of it and we ended up talking for at least 10 minutes. She turned out to be a very nice person and seemed to enjoy our discussion. That particular book evokes a lot of thought.
There has given me the opportunity to talk with people that I would never have done so otherwise. There is the great equalizer and you only learn about the person AFTER you get to know them and then only what they want to tell you. In RL we tend to speak to people who we think we will relate to; thus, missing out on a lot others have to offer.
With all that said, I really didn't need to speak to the hot, young lady in the airport. I'll bet she has lots of guys after her! BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

A random lady once started talking to me at the neighborhood Blockbuster and I simply failed to be surprised like I should have been. This was because I was thinking about There at the moment and reacted to her as I would to anyone coming up to talk to me in-world. It was a nice moment.
And BTW, another stoopid thing I did was when I found out about replacing your design for the white T-shirt. I thought replacing the picture file made me have the shirt I designed, and that it bypassed the approval process. I walked around a whole day dressed as a newbie thinking I looked cool! This finally ended when I *GASP* saw some one else wearing MY shirt! Well, of course I came right up to her and asked how come you're wearing the same shirt as me? Understandably, the girl laughed because to her it looked like I was wearing newbie clothes. 'DOH! after some more confusion,we figured out what my problem was, and she explained that replacing the texture only makes YOU see the design, not everyone else! I felt stupid and quickly changed into something else. Then of course I kept forgetting to put the normal white texture back into the Clothing Files. So to me, everyone was walking around in my shirt for about a month. The End. Don't let this happen to YOU! Never Knows Best...

Newbies!!! Aaaahhhrrrgggghhh!!
Last night I went to an area where they tend to congregate. I pulled out my couch and put it in a corner, out of the way of traffic. I sat and watched the activities and when I would see a newbie wandering around with a lost look I would IM them and have them join me. Then I'd ask if they needed help. Their first question was always the same:
How can I earn money fast?
I noticed a lot them running around in their undies...so I asked why. I was told they sold them!
So, I guess they are able to return them for Therebucks. Strange!
Later, I noticed a lady tricking on a board. I approached her and asked for some tips. She was gracious and showed me some good stuff. But, when I would fall off my board a newbie would immediately run up and hop on it. I called one an A$$hole and he wondered what he was doing wrong.
Oh, well....I left the area and spent some time with Arethusa and felt much better! BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

I made the mistake of buying a bare chest shirt in the wrong skin tone, but instead of returning it, I fortunately had the presence of mind to put it back up for auction where it sold quickly.
I guess my other newbie mistake was trying to join every club I found pertaining to my interests and suddenly discovering that after having been accepted into 5 clubs, I couldn't join anymore. Kevin McVeigh

Oh my!
I wish they had had the buddy program when I first got to There. It would have been handy to have had somoene around for a while to help me out. I did meet a lot of nice people. Someone suggested I go to Hoverbaord park.
While there I met a There employee (whose name I will not mention) and I immediately thought he was a bot! His repsonses seemed to be the same and he was probably using macros to type some of the same stuff over and over. Anyhow I think I was a bit rude to him and ant one point knocked hum over with the hoverbaord he lent me. ; )
I thought if he was just a bot he probably would not mind!
I have since IMed him and appologized.. a lot!
I also has a good experience where a nice perosn I met gave me a pair of Mercuria jeans and a purple shirt with a lion on the front. My biggest regret was that I did not write this person name down. I relaly wanted to find this person agian and say thank you. It made my first experiences in there very positive.

I thought of a new one on the way to work this morning.
Well, I wanted to get out of my white T-shirts soooo bad, but I spent most of my money on a buggy and a hair cut. So I searched the Auctions and all I could find in my price range was another white T-shirt with "Adept Newbie Helper" on it. Well, it wasn't just white and it was cheap. I bought it having no idea what it meant. <- that's me!
When I learned what I had I tried to auction it off and paid a hefty fee to auction something noone wanted. Oh, well.
Anyone need a t-shirt? Cheap!! Doh! BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

I have really enjoyed reading some of these stories. Especially BOUNCer's about There making talking to others in real life much easier. I know that since I have joined There it has been great, I can't think of any stupid newbie stuff I did, I guess I'm a little more of a watcher when it comes to new things, besides the fact I had a Therian IM me within seconds of arriving and offering me all sorts of advice and a new tee. I was lent items of all types on my first day to try out, they patiently explained everything I needed to know, listened and answered my noob questions with a kindness I don't often see in any kind of life. So if anyone reads this that met me on my first or second day of arriving, I want to say.. Thank you very much! I live in my own little world, but it's ok.... They know me There!
I hear voices.... and they don't like YOU!
I'm not a b@#$%, I'm just giftedly outspoken!

I remember when i logged on.. i was in karuna... then i teleported somewhere and the first person i remeber walking upto was OX64.. he was pretty cool.. but just was sitting on a couch with some glasses on..(Busy Green googles) He didnt answer me till a bit later.. but after i left, a big helium ball rolled by me.. i spent about 2-3 hours kicking and chasing it..lol.. I thought it was really fun.. not knowing about the other things like buggies and hoverboards... ill also asked people "Where do you get the Green Glasses?" .. lol.. i also went looking for the spas when i heard what they can do.. and i was looking all around for some hottubs things.. not knowing that a spa was like a magical chaging thing...lol ... lol.. also i was really amused that i could walk and drive on the water i was so excited when i could do that..lol.. Oh yea... in hoverboard park... i saw a hoverpack flyer fly by me.. and i tried so hard to catch up to him on foot... lol.. just to say that looked cool...lol i was asking everyone around there "Where did the flying person go?"... lol.. ok thats it now for my newbie experiences...lol

One of the saddest stupidest things I have done as a newb was buying a 6K purple Roman Haircut before I figured out what therebucks were. I also went around steeling peoples buggies thinking I was keeping them. LOL "I think he is a thug, and a brat and he has odd hair." -EvanK

[b] 1) This guy said something very rude and sexual to me on my 2nd night and so I clicked on his avitar for a "slap" option but there were "NO" options. *tso reflex:blush:
2) Ran to the edge of the place I first landed on THERE my first day and started running and jumping around testing keys and accidently plunged off the edge of the land smashing face first into the mountain below. *on tso you couldn't fall off the lots*
3) After my first few days I brought some money and purchased some travel vehicles. I took out my hoverboat and was about to jump in; another avie jumped in first and took off in it. I ran around typing in FULL CAPS...."HE STOLE MY BOAT, HE STOLE MY BOAT:0 I JUST PAID FOR IT. OMGGGGG* After snickering, and chuckling, the seasoned players standing near by told me that if it was mine to just click "retrive". I was soooo embarassed *************************************************** "Be strong, and remember: be yourself, cause you have to be someone, and everyone else is already taken." *************************************************** Sweets

All the people I met were SO nice that I spent my first few days thinking most of the avies must be There staff.
I didn't understand what the conversation markers were and wondered why they were always in different places when i'd log in.
I also bought hair, 8k!! before I realised what T$ were. Of course I also didn't know I could return it 'doh Hi Twist, glad I wasn't the only one!
Stood talking to someone wondering where my '''kiss emote had gone!
Took a long time to work out what "No Dropping" meant
Bought more T$, spent it all in the shop, then noticed the auctons!

LOL these are all so funny makes me feel much better. When I went into There my first night I have to say I had a really great night I met so many nice people.
Now to tell you how stupid I looked that night.
When I was first dropped in the game I was in the middle of nowhere and I was trying to walk and could not find a place to click on to walk all I could do was jump and jump. TSO got me too we need to have a forum for those of us who found the better side and left TSO to live in There.
After I figured out how to walk I walked right off the side of th bridge still now sure how I did that but I was pretty funny trying to get back up the side.
I finally ended up in Karuna Plaza where I met the greatest person who is still one of my best Avi friends Bulldog. He took me out for a buggy ride and then asked me if I wanted to drive. I do have to admit it LOL I asked can I wreck it? LMAO He assured me that I could not and thankfully I could not since I sucked as a buggy driver.
I was also looking at everyone else seeing their clothes and hair and wondering what I did wrong that I had these ugly clothes and a bad doo on. I finally decided to ask how I get good clothes and some friend dressed me in no newbie clothes and I bought hair. From then on they created a monster I have 3 hair styles and more clothes and shoes than I ever thought possible.
Just had to share with all of you the stupidity that I did on my first night.
BTW Hi Tikki

Few days ago I was using voice chat with my friend. Just the two of us were chatting along and I kept commenting on how chipper and happy he sounded that particular day. A few minutes later I realized I was talking to this other guy that just happened to be standing behind us. No wonder he sounded different....'doh

Thanks for the welcome Bo! I also was at the office reading some of these and had a big loud giggle.
There was one more embarassing incident where I accidentally put my friend Orixx on Ignore and when he came boarding over to me I asked him if he got had gotten electrocuted or something by that blue glowing fence that surrounds the race arena. Of course his reply came back like such, and I quote "l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l lllllll llllll llll" LOL I had never seen a headless stick figure before . Again a nice person told me I must've put him on ignore by accident to be seeing that. I apologized to him but having to go through 5 minutes of me asking him to type one letter for yes and two letters for no.... trying to figure what happened to him, he was not trying to hear it But he forgave me finally and together resumed our fumbling newbie tour through There again. *************************************************** "Be strong, and remember: be yourself, cause you have to be someone, and everyone else is already taken." *************************************************** Sweets

I thought I would resurrect this thread due to all the new members.
I’ll even start with another newbie goof:
I looked in the Activities listing for a place to play with my new paint gun. I found a spot and hit the teleport button. When I arrived I was told that the course was full and that I should wait outside until a spot became available. So, I did and in a few minutes a message crossed the bottom of my screen saying I could now enter. I entered with guns blazing! I was running around like a wild man shooting everyone in sight. I was halted by an IM asking, “What the hell are you doing?” “Uh, shooting people!” I responded. I was informed by an irate lady avie that I should ask to join the game and then wait for the next round to start. Oops! BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

So that's how you do turbo on a hoverboard!

Anyway talking of stupid things i've done....
I once instigated a paintball fight with a few people, ran off and hid behind a sign.... I jumped out a few times waving my gun (with ff still on) but no one shot me... so getting cocky i took off FF and walked out and promptly got my A$$ shot to hell!!!
It was only after i stopped slidding down to the bottom of the hill for the 3rd time that I was told about the ff showing on your name tag!!

Within the first month:
Didn't know how to walk sideways.
Wasn't aware of auctions first day.
Did the wholesale auction return mistake.
Couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get an activity flag up. Someone told me I could, but never explained it wasn't in my inventory. I spent a good amount of my second and third days searching for it in My Things before figuring it out by going "Hey what's this activity thing?" and using it.
Someone teleported me to the boneyard. And left me there after talking to me. And after they teleported out (on a summon, just said 'later'.) and not knowing how to use the MAP, nor knowing where I was... It took me some time before figuring out Karuna plaza was in my places, a week before I figured out how to get back there. I spent about two hours that night walking around Tyr thinking that eventually I'd stumble on Karuna Plaza. Even tried logging out and back in. Thinking it'd start me back there again like Activeworlds. Nope. ROFL
I've done and still do the talking to the wrong person cause they look alike thing. (Last time it happened was two nights ago.) Nothing like that kind 'what the hell are you talking about?' reminder. LOL
Scheduled an event... couldn't figure out where the track that came with the zone was. Again kept looking in my things, didn't know it was set up through "This Place".
Tried to schedule a buggy race in a paintball zone. Thought the zone was bugged.
Didn't realize when you hit a no vehicle zone that it went back into your inventory if you were using it. Walked around pissed for abount a half an hour that There took my board. Until I looked in My Things and saw it.
Had no idea what the spa was.
Couldn't figure out how to join a conversation the first week. Was even funnier when I was running past and around people looking for one so I wouldn't be hit, typing "OMG HELP HOW DO I JOIN!!!!". (Pre-forcefield.) Only to still get hit and sent flying.
Couldn't figure out why There moved ramps all the time. Then realized people bought them and dropped them.
Had no idea how to get to a skypad. Or why there were ramps in the sky. (Pre-Builder kit and PaZ) Thought I'd have to buy and drop ramps. And was like: Next day found hoverpacks in shop central.
Thought there was a trick door to get into the Tyr castle. (No one could get in then. Kinda like the second door up in the middle now.)
Saja... walked right off the edge not knowing that it was a looong way down. If not for learning how to use the map I would have been stuck.
Didn't know how to get the IM headset. Thought it was an accessory in change me or my things.
Sold my clothes before realizing running around nakkie was screaming n00b as much as the capris and shirt were.
Didn't know how to fall and laugh like others. Took some time before realizing ROFL or '''lol would do it.
Didn't know what action mode was, nor that you needed it to turbo. Thought the bar just went off when you got on a vehicle.
Thought something was wrong because my avatar only had a finger, a thumb, and three webbed fingers.
Had no idea about the There forums.
Didn't know about the internal browser.
Didn't know how to ignore.
Wasn't aware that accepting summon from someone on a hoverpack in mid air would send me falling.
Took a week to figure out how to summon and that you couldn't locate someone.
Ran up a grandstand in a funzone thinking the boarder couldn't hit me. Very wrong. (Again, this was pre-forcefield.)
----------- I could probably think of more LOL but this is it for now. Issues are everywhere, and everyone has issues. There is no escape!
People like you are the reason people like me need medication.

LOL...well I only found out about stepping sideways about a month ago when I bought my PAZ and wanted to line up bits of floor - I guess I had no reason to use it before! so that is 7 months before I realised about that - is that a record?

(yay, just noticed I am no longer a "newbie" here.. about time )

I found a newbie helper!
He left me in Tyr without telling me how to get back!!!!
So now I have a checklist of things I ask newbies. And now try to be a better newbie helper other than offering a vehicle, saying welcome, and leaving them (of all places) in the Boneyard with no idea how to get back. (As in: explaining that Karuna is on another island.... you can't drive. LOL)

Although this thread would make a good checklist for Newbie F.A.Q.'s and how to's, and also the same for Newbie helpers. Issues are everywhere, and everyone has issues. There is no escape!

My first week in and i stumbled on a hoverpack event while riding a borrowed hoverbike. I went in and started a hoverbike race and AAAAALLLLLLL the hoverpacks dissapeared. Whoever was running the event must have passed out free rentals. Everyone fell to the ground extremely angry. There was no dropping because it was a race, man they like ganged up on me.
Didn't know what to do so I said sorry and hauled avie-hiney out of the area.... I felt so stupid, it was one of those times I wish there was an avie idiot relocation program... http://www.pinkbunnyslippers.net
