I was just curious how people came up with their names in There and what they use it for. Here's mine:
A few years ago I was trying to come up with a hotmail account that wasn't already taken so I wouldn't have to add any extra letters or numbers to it. I also wanted it to be recognizable to people as being me. Well my last name is White, and after thinking for a little bit, what had come to mind was "the white light at the end of the tunnel." Deciding that that was altogether too long, I shortened it to thewhitelight, which seemed fine. I've used it in just about every online application since then. Some people still seem to get where I derived it from (I get lots of 'head towards the light' comments.) So good enough for me. In other things, I have come to use the phrase in some of my art, with both the original and holy connotations.
I don't think you can click on these links, but you can drag them to the address bar. < http://thewhitelight.50megs.com/images/tunnel_light.jpg > < http://thewhitelight.50megs.com/images/angel.jpg > < http://thewhitelight.50megs.com/images/in_the_beginning.jpg > < http://thewhitelight.50megs.com/images/lightbeam_small.jpg > < http://thewhitelight.50megs.com/images/temptaion_bright.jpg >

Squeaker is the name of one of my gerbils. I normally use the name Anikat but for some reason decided not to and Squeaker was the gerbil who was sitting on my foot at the time I was signing up for There (out of our 25 gerbils) "The mind is not a book, to be opened at will and examined at leisure. Vanno is my DJ name. I've been dj'ing for quite a while and i use xXDJVannoXx for all my screennames. Don't know why I took off the 'dj' for There. 'Vanno' is short for 'farli vanno', which loosely translated in Italian means ' to make them move'. Kinda cool, huh? No, not really? Oh well. 'tongue http://vanno.thereinperson.com

And if you Google StarManta, I have all but one of the results. Apparently there's also a Canadian musical called StarManta... Live near Cincinatti? Wanna meet other Thereians? IM me ingame or PM me here to receive updates about any RL gatherings planned.

Well, Kirrath is actually the first half of my standard RPG/mud character: Kirrath Jehrain. I'm not entirely sure, but I think it evolved from Gareth Bryne of Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" fame. I'm not even sure why he was the one chosen, as both my characters and my RL persona are more typical of Mat Cauthon. Oh well. ^_^ Fear what is known. - Daemon X

Mine is a rather long and boring story.
Short version is its the name I've been using since I've started my computer gaming 'career' lol.
I use it now because I'm used to it ... after 7 or so years using it, it grew on me. I also use it cause (it may seem kind of deceptive .. lol) but I think it makes me appear older, maybe a little wiser. I think it enables me to talk to people before they jump to any conclusions about my age before we have the chance to really even talk.
I met one person who actually asked my age after talking with her for a week or so and she was kind of floored when I told her how old I was. She was considerably older, but I loved that we were able to talk without having to worry about how 'society' deems an older woman and a younger guy should talk to each other.

... but I being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softly, becuase you tread on my dreams.

Aww don't worry SilverFox, at least you're older than me...I'm 18. ^_^ And I still manage to talk to people of all ages. the only difference I noticed before and after I tell someone in There my age is the sudden desire to know theirs too, and immediately following That, a desire to re-introduce myself. Kind of like "So then, nice to meet you, I'm Vikio" Because the usual introduction in There is just "hi". Somehow, "hi" doesn't seem an appropriate introduction between two people who know each other's age. Never Knows Best...

I seem to use car names a lot when I pick my character names. I have been a Dakota (Dodge,) a Libby (Jeep) and a Lady Viper (Dodge again.)
A good friend of mine is a car guy, and owns a 1955 Dodge that he affectionately refers to as "rosie." We had talked a great deal about this car, so when I had the opportunity to create a new TSO character, I created "Rose E" in "her honor."
Rose E evolved to Rose E'vette. (again taking from the short hand term for corvette) However, since the THERE naming process did not allow for apostraphe's I ended up using underscores.
Of all my character names, I have grown to love this one the best, and like SilverFox will prolly remain as my online identity. although for the sake of typing I often shorten it to just Rose. Rose E'vette Assistant Editor Caldera Sun-Times

I added Dark in front of it because it just sounded cool to me. When I signed up for There, I decided to just shorten it up to Fury. Whats funny about my online name is that I'll meet someone in RL who I initially met online and instead of calling me by my real name, Mike, they'll call me Fury instead. http://www.darkfury.net/fff.html

The story of how I picked CrystalShard may actually sound pretty boring: It always takes me ages whenever I have to think about a name for something, since i'm a perfectionist... when I had to pick a nickname for There, I got stuck as usual. :P
Whenever I meet someone on There, in 80% of the cases they say: "Your name... its from < The Dark Crystal >, isnt it?". If I had a ThereBuck for each and every time I heard this, i'd own 3 hoverboats by now.
When I (finally) picked the name, it was mostly influenced by the < structure of the internet >: Its a crystal formation. Any dot can reach any other dot via multiple paths. If you break the crystal, the shard will keep functioning as an independed entity and the structure will live on.
... then again, it may have been influenced by the big, slightly broken quartz crystal that is sitting on my desk.
Probebly both. :)

"Ariadne" comes from Greek Mythology...I chose it back when I was in TSO and it's just kind of stuck now, that and Aria or Ari
Ariadne was the daughter of Minos, the King of Crete. She fell in love with Theseus and helped with slaying of the Minotaur by providing Theseus with a reel of golden magical thread to find his way out of the monster's labyrinth. Theseus took Ariadne with him when he sailed for Athens but soon abandoned her, leaving her asleep on the island of Naxos. There, Dionysus, the god of wine, wooed and later married her. The Minotaur..*extra info*..was half man and half bull, offspring of the wife of King Minos, Pasiphae. Poseidon, the god of the sea, caused Pasiphae to fall in love with a beautiful white bull to punish Minos for not sacrificing the bull to him. The Minotaur was kept in the Labyrinth, where 14 youths were annually sacrificed to him by Minos. "Cake or Death?" ~ Eddie Izzard

My real name is Dell and it's not short for anything. When people ask me what Dell is short for, I sometimes say Delilah for fun, so I started using it online.
I also think it's a good on-line name because people know the Biblical character. That can be a good conversation starter (or reason for being mean, depending on my mood) with a would-be "Samson".

I used to go by LocoGringo("crazy white guy" in spanish) on allot of boards and chatrooms. I got it from a band whose motto was "F#c* You We're From Texas". I got tired of people thinking I was hispanic and/or was being sarcasticly racist. I desided it was time for a change. I started looking for words with dual meaning for my new nickname. Some of my out of state buds call me Tex so I started playing with variations of texas and texan. Down here when we say texan, it sounds like techzen. One day I saw Techzen on a billboard and the rest is history.

Hmmm... Let's see... It all started about 7 years ago when I was bored on the job as a highschool photographer, just getting into web and graphic design and was playing with my brand new laptop... At the time, all it had on it graphically was MSPaint. I started doodling and drew and ant, but not just any ant, an ant with attitude.
This became my DVant... For two reasons, he was a deviant ant, and my first initials are DV, so it stuck. The little bugger was my desktop for a long time and became one of the voices in my head. Later I got a REAL graphics app (Fireworks... Yep, I'm a loyal Macromedia junkie) and redid my DVant with a bit more character...
THe concept kept crawling around in my head and i started think that even with the mohawk and tattoos, he wasn't a REAL deviant ant, so I redid the image yet again and came up with this.

This was about the time I started doing freelance web design, and DVant became my logo as well as an alter-ego.
THe problem was, even the spelling I used was pretty damned common in chat rooms and games. And when I created my avatar in There, there was already a D_V_Ant, and I didn't want to confuse the issue. So I had to find something that was different, but I didn't want to stray from the whole ant theme. I stumbled upon Myrmex, which is part of the species names for many types of ants. "Reality is the story I read in my mind, written by my senses."

Plus, my bestfriend bought a baby outfit (even though we have no kids yet) with the lyrics of Imagine on it, just so beautiful I couldn't stand it.

So I chose BuddyBoy because I wanted something friendly and approachable (I just wanted to be loved! Is that so wrong???). I also call my son BuddyBoy.
And yes, I've seen the movie "The First Power," but my avie name was not chosen based on the movie... although it's pretty cool to hear the devil-guy say "See ya 'round, buddy boy."

It's an anagram of my real name. I started using it in the (now defunct) LuxuriaMusic.com chat lounge three years ago, and then on some other sign-ins, then on my weblog, and it's catching on with people. Plus, the first part of it is a non-standard spelling, plus it's an unusual compound -- so NOBODY ELSE HAS IT ... ! When I was active standup comedy, I (and everybody else) tried to use "Comic" as a screen name different places, but it was almost ALWAYS taken. BrykMantra never is ...

Well, I was on a short vacation from my normal job as personal asisstant to Mr. Jonathan Depp in the bahamas. I was wandering and got seperated from my tour group. That's when I met the undiscovered "uhhuna-huna" tribe. And they made me their cheif. I hooked up with their gorgeous cheif son guy and had lots of babies. The tribal word for mom (duckliyamamish) was a bit much for the children, thus comes the nickname Ducki. It stuck when Mr. Depp personally came ot the tribe to rescue me and fight for my love, the name grew on him, and therefore I permantly became Ducki.

My name actually came from the lyrics of one of my favorite songs in the world by one of my favorite artists who i will not list because i'm super protective of my music. hey, i'm a weirdo. i use it on most of the MMOs i play. I get enough questions about this as it is lol
The name originally comes from a joke with the Warcraft 3 community, I used to play Warcraft 3 a lot before I came in here (or There) and went from 0 to slut in 2.8 seconds FatHamburger came about from a guy named noh0pe :P who quickly became the butt of everyone's jokes from the half arsed trash talking he would do when he usually lost the game. He was a Frenchman with bad english who was impersonating a Korean with bad english trash talking americans, with such gems as :
"Die in twin tower fathamburger" or "fahamburger use real strat no twin tower" or "eat my twin hamburger tower burger" or "ham tower burger fat!" etc
you get the idea, twin towers I am guessing is both a dual reference to the WTC and the double tower rush strat, but Im probably giving him too much credit, and of course americans are fat and eat lots of hamburgers ha ha. This guy was reportedly headbutted by another Frenchman for being an ass at a tournament too. Anyhow the fathamburger motif became catchy and we all started using it and now warbucket.com uses fathamburger.com (that is not my domain! to try and pay off their costs. What a difference a loser can make!
People who really really know me though know I absolutely adore bad Engrish in all its many forms (www.engrish.com yeah yeah) and go out of my way to #### up my English even more so I like talk eat of your good cow with much happiness! Here's a comic strip that proabably wont make much sense to non warcraft players but what the hell Die Fat Hamburger! < http://www.warbucket.com/comic.php?id=146 >

If you know me, you know I'm half Irish and 100% proud of it, I've been using my confirmation name of Siobhan as my screenname since joining the TSO beta test last September. It's my favorite Irish name, was supposed to be my daughter's name (but my mom talked me out of it, since it's so confusing to pronounce and spell) and I've met lots and lots of great people because of my hard to pronounce Gaelic name. Friends from TSO and There who know my real name still call me Siobhan or just plain "Sio" just because it's so much a part of me now I'd change my name legally, irl, if my mom wouldn't get insulted, since I just love the name Siobhan.
btw, for those who still don't know how to pronounce it, it's "Shi-vohn" which sort of rhymes with chiffon.
Hope that explanation wasn't too boring, but I've enjoyed reading this thread. I often ask people in game how they came up with their avatar's name. I'm nosy like that,

That means "your name is beautiful."
At least I think I got it right.. lol I took 2 years of Irish Gaelic in college to fulfill my language requirement... though I must admit I have not retained it as well as I would have liked.
Ta beag Gaeilge agam. (I speak a little Irish)
Hmm lets see, what other good phrases do I know?
Dia duit (hello) Dias muire duit (hello back) Cad e mar ata tu? (how are you) Ca bhfuil tu i do chonai? (where do you live?) Ta me i mo chonai i Bhiladelphia (I live in Philadelphia) uisce beatha (whiskey- literally translated "water of life") Is maith liom uisce beatha (I like whiskey) Ba mhaith liom pionta beorach (I would like a pint of beer) Is fuath liom leadog a imirt (I hate playing tennis) D'ith mo mhadra mo scrudu (my dog ate my exam) Go raibh maith agat (thank you)
And my all time favorite Irish word:
francach
Which can be translated to mean either rat or frenchman. The two words are completely indistinguishable in conversation. For example "Feicim francach," could mean "I see a rat" or "I see a frenchman."
Some other interesting irish words:
Ollmargadh (pronounced Ol-warr-goo), Supermarket Beag (pronounced beyg), small
Irish is an extremely difficult language to learn, as there are many rules to follow which do not make intuitive sense alongside one another... this is because, not too long ago, Ireland made an effort to standardize the language by combining several very different dialects into one and taking some rules from one, others from another.
High school kids in Ireland are forced to study gaelic in school, but it is not regularly spoken. The only place anyone really speaks irish anymore in Ireland is in the Gaeltacht, an area where they are striving to preserve the language.
Pronunciation is also extremely hard to learn, as it different consonant/vowel combinations result in very different sounds, all of which are very counterintuitive from an english speaking point of view. For example, "uisce beatha" pronounced "ish-kuh baa-hah."
Ahem, and that completes my Irish lesson for today! rofl... KittenKat >^..^< CEO of OY! http://fergusonv.com/there

well Chyna Skye is the name that i want to use for our first daughter when she is born (my b/f and i are disscussing marrage and this convo came up ) i thought of this name as i was growing up and have loved it since so the name is always on my mind. he likes the name but is unsure that the child will love it lol. so i thought that just in case we dont get to use the name that i hould put it to good use.
btw... what do you guys think of the name? i think it is a perfect girls name (Chyna-first name Skye-middle name) but my b/f thinks that kids would pick on her lol. you think i should get the name in mind or should i just keep it as my own nick only?
oh yeah almost forgot... the starz heheh i added those because i am the founder of the *GIRLZ* Gaming Society (www.girlzgamingsociety.com) and we add *starz* to our names on forums and in gameplay so that we stand out and so that people know we are members. plus it just looks cute ;-)

| Quote (Ariadne @ Aug. 07 2003, 2:49 pm) | "Ariadne" comes from Greek Mythology...I chose it back when I was in TSO and it's just kind of stuck now, that and Aria or Ari
Wow, thats some story Ariadne. I'm quite impressed. I'm also a huge Eddie Izzard Fan. History is a joke played by the victors on the vanquished in front of an audience that dares not laugh.

I got mine back around 1999 when I signed up for the MSN Zone. I liked Flight Simulator and wanted a name like pilot, but since it was already taken I needed to add some numbers or something, so after some thinking I came up with Area 51 and BAM! I had a name. I've been using it on everything since then, maybe slightly modified depending on what the service allows, and I've never signed up to find my name taken.

If anyone has ever seen the musical opera, "Les Miserables", you'll have heard of the tragic Fantine. Fantine was actually a heroine of sorts, even tho she dies in the story. Cossette got all the "good press" and Fantine was the stronger of the two... Thus, Fantine, strong, brave and heroic ... and misunderstood! I also used this name in a very, very, very early version of AOL (later than 1.0 but less than 3.0)

That's where Cosette came from, Fantine. Only problem was that it was created for my daughter- and it was later decided that the content was too mature for a 11yr old. Hmmmm Mine has several angles which all kinda fit Firstly there is this play by some dead English chap - that covers the intellectual side Secondly a Tempest is a rather large storm - that covers the dark and moody side of me. Thirdly there is the Tempest Computer Comms Security, which very sort of covers what I do. And finally there is the Tempest WWII fighter, which I though was cool.
I've used it online in one form or another over the last 10 or years.

Your post wasn't stupid at all Troz.
I found it amusing which is a very good thing since I'm suffering from extreme There withdrawal
I might need someone to talk me through this

I have had this name since TSO beta, and I often have people think it came from the same named skill.. no I did not name myself after a skill, I actually had forgotten there was a skill with that name! lol Actually a few people have guessed where I got my name, but very few. If you are a Buffy or Angel fan then you will know where I got the name! I couldn't remeber how to spell Cordellia, but ever since I found out the actress' name is Charisma, I thought it was an awesome name. I just love unusual names! My eldest son's middle name is Darius, (it would have been his first name, but I chickened out! , my youngest son's first name is Darien.. I love it! and if my hubby hadn't vetoed it, my daughters name would have been Charisma, so since I couldn't give it to her, I gave it to myself! lol Too bad I can't always live up to it!! So you see, that is how I chose my name, to be different, and to show my love for all things buffy/angel!!
I live in my own little world, but it's ok.... They know me There!
I hear voices.... and they don't like YOU!
I'm not a b@#$%, I'm just giftedly outspoken!

When I was younger I used to hang out with my brother and his friends and they all adopted names of different X-men characters. So in order to hang out with them I had to pick up a name (they had some silly club and you had to speak a password and stuff... lol it was all rather stupid, but anyway I digress).
So I was GIVEN the name of Shadowcat for two reasons. First she was the little kid of the X-men and I was the little kid of the group, and second they always liked to use me as to get things for them when they didnt want to get up "Dont worry you can just phase through the wall and get it". (For all of you that dont know... Phasing is in short is the ability to pass through solid matter). Yeah, I know. They were mean lol.
So yeah, thats where the Shadowcat comes from. KP come from her real name initials, Kitty Pryde.
And shes been my favorite character ever since... "Living in a block-head world, and I am a spherical girl"

After receiving my acceptance e-mail, I sat staring at the There login screen, trying to come up with a name that was unique, original and, preferably, intelligent- and/or enigmatic-sounding.
The word "perihelion" popped into my mind. I knew the word, but couldn't quite remember exactly what it meant. A quick trip to dictionary.com provided me with the definition:
"The point nearest the sun in the orbit of a planet or other celestial body."
I liked it, and the rest is history.

When i started using internet (1996), i needed a nickname, for e-mail accounts, to log in at some sites, chatrooms 'yada 'yada... well i just looked around my music CD collection and started to read the name of the musicians.. Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam why? i dunno... and now that im in There i decided to change it to St0ne (zero instead of regular "o") since i couldn´t use Stone as my nickname InWorld. Is funny that even my family and friends in RL calls me Stone sometimes. And hey, im dont have heart made of stone. GTX There: http://www.gtxthere.tk/

Back in 1994 I ws working on a made for video series that fell through in the fundng stages. One of the characters in this series about a person living full time in a VR world was a minor reoccuring character of a anthrophmorphic fox woman that would show up at the door of the kitchen in each episode and ask to borrow a cup of sugar.
The gag was to continue for the first 4 epsidoes with her showing up, interrupting a conversation, and then leaving with a cup of sugar. In the 5th episode one character breaks down out of furstration and askes her what she is doing with all that sugar. VV reveals that she has a atomic mutated Uncle Milty's Ant Farm and the sugar is to pay tribute to the queen. In the next episode at the beginning she would have shown up and asked for an axe instead of the sugar and then at the end of the epsidoe she was to bring it back rather messy but not saying anything.
In the final epsidoe of the series she was to show up with a foil wrapped plate with something that looked like a turkey.. Given it to the main chatacter and said 'thaks for the use of the axe... When asked about that it is she says it is an giant ant roast.
As I said the funding fell through but not before I ended up with a copy of Animaiton Master by Hash Inc and ahd created a 3-D model of this fox woman. Well I tured to fan art and started gaining in popularity. After a while I pressed a CD colleciton of my art to CDR and sold out the 30 copies I had made in only 2 days. Later versions sold 100 copies each.
At conventions and gatherings people generaly started to relate to my creation more than they did me! Now I know how Mark Hammil felt.. well without the residuals that is... They no longer rembered my real name, but rather this character I had created.
When I went to IRC chat I took the character name with me. Ofeten I was elevated to 'The' status.. as in "you are THE Virtual Vikki" which I always thought to be a flattering but strange statement as there never seemed to be more than one of me around.
At one such convention event I picked up my name tag and on it was printed in rather large letters "Virtual Vikki." When I complained to the person behind the desk he said that no one knew me as anything else.
I tried playing another character in TSO but I never got very far with that.
So when I signed onto There I just kept the name I have been using for the past nine years.

Hey Ibizza! Welcome to the best forum on the WWW!
I have definitely heard of Estonia. You are very close to Russia and Latvia, and only a swim away from Helsinki. Well, maybe a long boat ride!
Please stop in here often! BOINCer, but you may call me Bo

| Quote (Vikio @ Aug. 06 2003, 1:03 am) | | Aww don't worry SilverFox, at least you're older than me...I'm 18. |
Whoa Really? w00t!!!!! (See Real Appearances thread)

| Quote (Tansy @ Aug. 07 2003, 6:08 pm) | I spent 15 months on TSO before I came to There, and with the name Tansy Rose. The aim was to create a flower shop but shops weren't available. Still, I kept it
My name got simplified on There. I get called Tans and that's alright too. Tansy has a root in Greek of immortality. Quite appropriate because our avatars are quite immortal.
Have you thrown your avatar down a cliff recently?

That said, GameMaster stands for what it reads... Game Master. Yes, I play video games. I love video games, and if I could get a real job playing video games, I'd take it in a heartbeat!

Do I really need to explain my name.....
Nothing better than being able to respond to people with:
"Well what were you expecting from someone with the name Issues? I mean seriously?" Issues are everywhere, and everyone has issues. There is no escape!
People like you are the reason people like me need medication.
